Introduction of Call of Cthulhu RPG (1981)

In 1981, Chaosium published Call of Cthulhu, a tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) based on the cosmic horror writings of H.P. Lovecraft.

Designed by Sandy Petersen, the game diverged from traditional fantasy RPGs by emphasizing investigation, mystery, and psychological horror over combat and treasure hunting. Players assumed the roles of investigators delving into strange and terrifying occurrences, often confronting eldritch beings beyond human comprehension. The game's mechanics introduced a sanity system, reflecting the mental strain characters experienced when exposed to the horrors of the mythos. Call of Cthulhu received critical acclaim for its innovative approach and has remained a staple in the TTRPG community, influencing numerous horror-themed games in the decades since its release.
