3月、国際交流基金ロサンゼルス日本文化センターの企画・支援にて、アリゾナの籠編みアーティストJoshua Yazzieさんと私、それぞれの仕事を紹介し交流するイベントが催されました。
その際の所感をお伝えします。
古来営まれてきた二つの編組工芸には共通する部分も多く、一方で様々な相違点もあり沢山の学びがありました。
中でも印象的な事柄が二つありました。
一つはJoshuaさんの籠づくりは、素材の採集から仕上げまで一貫して自然に根差していること。素材が採れた時の姿そのままを生かして多様な文様を作り、芸術性の高い作品に仕上げていることでした。京都の竹工芸においては商品価値を高めるために科学技術が取り入れられた一面がありますが、そういったものの無い形に立ち返って制作をしたいという思いが湧きました。
もう一つは彼がコミュニティの一員としての在り方をとても大切にしていることでした。「自分の伝えた技術により、生徒たちが自分よりも良い作品を作ってくれることを願っている」という彼の言葉には、地域社会のために自らが為すべきことを考え、やり遂げようという意思が表れていました。自分も、他県から京都に来て仕事を営む身として地域の方々に感謝し、次代のためにできる事を一層考えなければと思いました。
イベント中にはお客様、運営の方々や私が、Joshuaさんの言葉に感銘を受ける場面が多々ありました。こうして異なる地域の人々がそれぞれの文化に触れ、交流し、共感や敬意を深める、そういったことが平和への一つの筋道になるのではと思いました。
また一連のイベントでは、アメリカ在住で日本文化を伝えるため真摯に活動されている方々にご企画や通訳などお世話になり、そのお力あってこそ、この仕事も知ってもらえるのだと本当に有難く思いました。
この貴重な機会に深く感謝しています。
In March, some events took place with support of the Japan Foundation LA, for introducing two traditional weaving arts and cultural exchange. The artist Joshua Yazzie based in Arizona and l participated in this project.
The following is my impression of the project.
Both arts have been nurtured in the nature from ancient times, so they have similarities. On the other hand there are differences arising from natural and cultural features.
Particularly I have two impressive things.
One is that Joshua’s works entirely rooted in nature from gathering materials to completion. He weaves various patterns making use of appearance of materials when they are gathered, and creates artistic works. Meanwhile in Kyoto basketry there is one side that incorporates technology so as to enhance marketability. I’m thinking to try such way of making as people in Japan also did before.
Another is that he cherishes the way of being a member of his community. In his words “I hope that students will make better works than me with techniques I have taught.”, I can see his determination to achieve what he can do for the community. Looking back at myself, as an incomer engaged in Kyoto’s traditional art, I need to consider what I can do for next generation much more, acknowledging people’s favor.
In the events, there were many scenes that visitors, staffs and I were deeply impressed by Joshua’s words. It will be a path toward peace that people experience other culture and have a relationship with people in other religions, feeling empathy and respect like this.
And, the events were supported with project management and interpretation by people who have been introducing Japanese culture sincerely in the U.S.. I cannot communicate important things about my work without such supports, and really appreciate them.
