Ferrari has said goodbye to Sainz Jr by letting his dad drive his F1 car

Ferrari has said goodbye to Carlos Sainz Jr as the Spaniard gets ready to join Williams after four years in red, and the Scuderia made sure his final farewell was a proper family affair.

Rather than the usual office whip-round for a thoroughly whelming leaving gift, Ferrari decided to break out two 2022 F1-75s so that Sainz Jr could share the Fiorano circuit with his father. How very sweet.

Unless you’ve been living under one of the particularly large rocks that litter the Dakar Rally stages, you’ll know that Sainz Jr’s father is rally raid legend Carlos Sainz Sr, and Ferrari says that “although he spun the car, Senior soon found his rhythm, completing several runs doing consistent lap times”. Well, if Fernando Alonso is still doing it at 43 years of age, perhaps 62-year-old Sainz Sr has a shot at a seat next season?

We’re told that Sainz Sr was allowed a few laps of Fiorano on his own to warm up, before his son joined him on track for a few parade laps in formation. We can’t confirm whether it descended into a proper head-to-head soon after, but we can’t help but think the student would have wanted to prove that he’s now the master.

Red Bull has sacked Sergio Perez, with Liam Lawson touted as his replacement

Brutal, just brutal. Well, not really actually, but you know what we mean. Red Bull has officially terminated its deal with Sergio Perez, bringing the Mexican driver’s F1 career to an abrupt end. For the time being at least.

There’s no word yet on who his replacement will be, although it’s widely expected that Liam Lawson will be promoted from the junior RB squad, getting the nod over the more experienced Yuki Tsunoda. We shall see.

A joint statement from Red Bull and Perez read: “After four incredible seasons together, Oracle Red Bull Racing and Serio Perez have reached an agreement to part ways.

“During this time Checo has played a crucial role in securing multiple grand prix wins, countless podium finishes, and two constructors’ world championships, contributing significantly to the team’s most successful era in Formula 1.”

Similarly impacted car makers, including BYD, Chery, Mini, Polestar and Volvo are moving production of some EVs from China to Europe to circumvent the tariffs, but Nio hasn't announced any plans to build cars in Europe, having passed on the chance to take over Audi's EV factory in Belgium.

Nio started selling EVs in Europe in 2021 but has yet to make its way to the UK, so the expansion of Onvo will mark the company's first foray into the market.

Per Automotive News Europe, Yu said that Onvo exports to Europe would begin when production reaches 30,000 units per month, which is expected to be around March 2025.

It isn't yet clear how the cars will be sold in the UK; Autocar has approached Nio for comment.

News of Onvo's expansion outside China comes just days before Nio is due to unwrap the first model from its second new EV Brand, Firefly, which is conceived as a maker of premium small EVs with a global focus.

It has yet to confirm European timelines for Firefly, though.

Nio's existing European line-up is oriented towards the premium end of the market, and so the EU's import tariffs have a less dramatic impact on profitability, but it's likely that the firm will want to build its more value-focused Onvo and Firefly models locally, in order to keep the prices down.

The L60, Onvo's first model, is a Tesla Model Y-rivalling crossover that majors on practicality and efficiency. It's sold in China at the equivalent of £24,000 but is likely to be priced nearer to its American rival at just north of £40,000 in Europe.

The L60 showcases how Onvo will target family buyers in the lower premium segment, with an overt focus on interior space, safety and utility.

Ingredients
400–450g/14 oz–1lb hard cheese of your choice (such as Shropshire blue and Wensleydale with cranberries), cut into 2cm/¾in cubes
260g/9oz mini mozzarella balls
160g/5½oz artichoke hearts
75g/2½oz cornichons
200g/7oz cherry tomatoes
180g/6oz black and green olives
180g/6oz cured meat or salami
200ml/⅓ pint chutney of your choice
To serve
rosemary sprigs
crackers, crostini or baguette slices
Recipe tips
Method
Divide the ingredients between 30-or-so cocktail sticks, alternating between cheese cubes and mozzarella balls, artichoke pieces, cornichons, tomatoes, olives and cured meat.

Spoon the chutney into a small ramekin and set in the middle of a large serving plate. Neatly place all the prepared appetisers around the centre ramekin to form a circular wreath shape.

Add small rosemary sprigs in between the appetisers to decorate. Serve alongside crackers, crostini or baguette slices.
