Queen bee is born

Eric caught the first swarm of the season!! In April and May hives will split. The old queen lays eggs to grow a new queen, then she takes half of the bees and leaves the hive. The swarm of bees clusters on a tree or branch (with the queen in the middle). Then they send out scout bees to find a new hive to call home. Swarms are loud but generally not aggressive, since they do not have a hive or brood to protect. This swarm was close to the ground, making it easier to transfer into a box.
