Having already represented Team South Africa at last year’s World Champs in Italy, Chrisitan Davidson is no stranger to what is expected when it comes to competing at an international level. The Summerstrand Lifesaver has been involved in the sport since he was a micronipper at the age of six and has gone from strength to strength.

The 19-year-old has enjoyed multiple gold medal successes and a Victor Ludorum at the DHL Lifesaving National Champs over the past few years, while competing with the Seniors as a Junior. Now out of school and growing his game further, Chrisitan takes his exploits in the Surf and Stillwater events to new heights.

His highlight of representing his country at Worlds was superseded by an excellent showing in the green and gold, where he came sixth in the Surf Swim and the Iron Man (Ocean Man), and third and fourth, respectively, in the Taplin and the Board Rescue to make his country proud.

We wish Christian and the South African Team all the best in their preparations for the 2023 International Surf Rescue Challenge from the 20th to the 23rd September at South Padre Island, Texas, USA.

Last but not least of our Protea team heading to the Commonwealth Lifesaving Champs is Boksburg Aquatic Saints Lifesaver, Aiden Bornman. He is a South Africa record holder for 17 to 18 years old and under in the 100m Manikin, 50m Manikin Carry, and the 100m Rescue Medley.

The Gauteng Province Lifesaving’s International Lifesaver of the Year 2023 had a remarkable showing at the DHL LSA National Club Champs. He won the Victor Ludorum for his age group and was a silver medallist in the Surf Swim event.

This will be the second time that Aiden will be competing at the Commonwealth Champs, and he will be following up his impressive performances in the green and gold at World’s last year in Italy, where he competed in four finals against the world’s best lifesaving athletes – one of the major highlights in this talented 18-year-old’s career.

We wish Aiden and the South African Team all the best in their preparations over the coming weeks for the 2023 RLSS Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships taking place from the 13th to 17th of September in Windsor, Canada.

Rinus Hattingh from Senathla Lifesaving Club joined the Lifesaving community five years ago, and he has already excelled in the pool, winning gold at the 2023 DHL Lifesaving South Africa National Club Championships earlier this year.

This will be Rinus’ first taste of international Lifesaving Sport competition, and his hard work has paid off. The 22-year-old was first introduced to lifesaving after rugby injuries curtailed any dreams of making it in the oval game. Rinus’ competitive spirit led him to take up swimming as a sport and get involved in Lifesaving.

Rinus specialises in the 100m Manikin Carry with Fins, the 50m Short Dummy, and the 100m Tow and tube – where he won gold at National Champs.

We wish Rinus and the South African Team all the best in their preparations over the coming weeks for the 2023 RLSS Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships taking place from the 13th to 17th September in Windsor, Canada.

The international lifesaving competition kicks off in a month, starting with the 2023 RLSS Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships from 13-17 September in Windsor, Canada.
Meet the team who will be representing Lifesaving South Africa.
Rebecca Fury competes in the surf swim, run swim run and pool events, which includes the obstacle race, super lifesaver and 100m manikin carry. She has represented Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club - CSLC and Western Province in several Club and Interprovincial championships, and this is her first foray into international competition in the green and gold of South Africa.
Over the past six years, Rebecca has gone from strength to strength in her budding lifesaving career, where she was encouraged to join as a nipper due to her strong swimming skills and her deep love for the ocean.
The 15-year-old Capetonian showed her talents in the U13 Nipper division at the 2022 DHL LSA National Championships in Gqeberha and made her intentions clear by claiming the Victrix Ludorum. Previously, in 2021, she broke the South African Stillwater records, but the real highlight for this talented teenager is being selected to represent her country.
We wish Rebecca and the South African Team all the best in their preparations over the coming weeks.
