A dahlia bed made ready for harvest. Varieties labeled. Netting and rebar supports taken down. Plants cut to above ground. Landscape fabric and irrigation picked up. Now the tubers stay in the ground for upto 2 weeks to harden off so they will store better for the winter.

800 plant tubers to lift out of the ground THIS SATURDAY! It's all fun to us "people of the dirt". Join us if you can, the more the merrier!

We have been busy adding another dahlia plot at Rogers Farm demonstration garden. Society members and UMaine students cleared the plot. A soil test was done and amendmets added. Charlene and Jess helped with irrigation and laying the fabric what had planting holes burned into it by Mary and Jim from Salt Farm Flowers. Tubers and plants started by Bagleys Greenhouse were planted. Now to watch them grow! Oh look, 2 weeks later, our first bloom.

2018 Dahlia planning meeting this Sunday, 2/4 at 1pm, 17 Cromwell Dr., Orono.
Please RSVP Christine @ [email protected]

We will also discuss different ways of growing and harvesting dahlias.

If you have a tuber variety you would like to donate to the plot, or make more tubers from your favorite tubers, there will be a video on making cuttings that will bloom this year. I will have supplies to get them started. Bring your tuber to the meeting. Remember not to let it freeze getting here. (I have the rooting hormone).

If anyone would like to have some tubers from storage to start now at your home, we can check them out in my basement.

Hello Everyone,
It’s Harvest and Tuber sharing time. I am away until 10/25, so we will have the Harvest Saturday, 10/28 starting at 9:00AM, Roger’s Farm. Bring a spade if you have one and any tubers you would like to share.

Connie Perry, Audrey Cross, and I identified and labeled each plant. Marie and Al McMonagle, Holly and Dennis Violette, Connie and I cut all of them down after the frost. What is left to do is to dig up and wash them. Then we will move to 17 Cromwell Drive, Orono and demonstrate division & storage options while processing the tubers for storage. Also we will have a pot luck.

Hope you can join us Christine Mainella
