mayfield brooks is in town for their guest artist residency!

A Mead-Swing event is happening tomorrow (Thursday) at 7pm in Hallock auditorium; a showing of Whale Fall followed by an artist talk and reception.

March 5th (Saturday) from 11am to 1pm is an open workshop entitled "Whale Falling into Attunement" in Warner Main.

All events are free and open to the public!

mayfield brooks' residency is supported by Dance; Environmental Studies; Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies; as well as by the Multicultural Resource Center.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of Magnesium (winter term 1972) and the opening of a special exhibition at the Allen Memorial Art Museum [https://amam.oberlin.edu/exhibitions-events/exhibitions/2022/01/18/collective-gestures-the-impact-of-experimental-performance-at-oberlin-in-the-1970s].

Next Thursday, we are hosting a 3pm walk through of the exhibition (at the Allen) and then a 4:30pm showing of the winter term physical research we have been engaging with the Jurij Konjar and a group of international guest dancers (including some recent alum) in Warner Main. On Friday, there'll be an 8pm showing of the same!

Konjar's residency is made possible through a grant from the John P. Murphy Foundation.

We are so excited to announce that Jurij Konjar is in Oberlin and teaching Winter Term workshops exploring the history of Contact Improvisation and Steve Paxton's seminal work Magnesium.

Konjar's residency is made possible through a grant from the John P. Murphy Foundation, and is part of CI50's year-long celebration at Oberlin College.

There will be a public showing off his class's final piece on February 17th at 4:30pm, and on February 18th at 8pm.

This past weekend was rich with contact improvisation at Oberlin College. We are grateful for all who came to dance, hold space, and build community at our alumni/regional jam. We'd love to see photos you've collected or even reflections on your experiences. Hope to see you all back in Oberlin for CI 50 in July!

Contact Improvisation I taught by Ann Cooper Albright and Becca Janovic meets three times a week from 10-11:50am with an additional jam on Sundays. Here we can see students participating in a round robin at the end of class. We are building momentum here in Oberlin, looking forward to upcoming CI events and, of course, the conference in the summer!

Critical Mass' logo was created by artist David Brown. Brown currently works as an art teacher and cites contact as a major influence both as a teacher and as an artist. " Whether that is following a physical point of contact on a body through space, or a concept through time, or a line on a piece of paper. It all seems the same, and all flows smoothly when we 'replace ambition with curiosity.' ".

Brown found inspiration for this piece from the book Ann Cooper Albright wrote on the drawings of Isadora Duncan. The image you see here was crafted by referencing Brown's own archive of photos as well as some online to create gesture paintings of folks doing contact before adding the text.

On Monday July 5th Ann Cooper Albright hosted some former Obies who do Contact for a pool party at Shipley Farm near Philadelphia. Pictured with Ann here are her former students Miryam Coopersmith, Rachel Ford, Kate Fishman, Olivia Guerriero, Liz Weinstein.

They are all looking forward to driving out for the November 12-14th alumni/regional jam at Oberlin College.
