In mourning the loss of our client and friend Andrew Massey last Friday, we began thinking of all of the music he made in Cleveland, New Orleans, Providence, San Francisco, Milwaukee, Fresno, Toledo, Vermont and the opportunities we had to enjoy his work in all of them. At 72 he’s left us too soon, but the music will linger as will his droll wit and calm demeanor. He was a composer, too and we look forward to finding ways for his music to be heard. We join his family and friends in every corner of this country in sharing this time of sadness and grief.

Join us on Wednesday April 4th for the second celebratory concert by the Raphael Trio, as they conclude their survey of the complete Dvorak Trios. Of special interest will be the Bagatelles, performed with a harmonium and a special appearance by Violinist Kinga Augustyn.

So the great new museum devoted to African-American History opened on the Mall in Washington DC this past weekend and we are surprised and delighted that there is a section devoted to musicians and in the midst of Charlie Parker and Public Enemy is our own Michael Morgan. Heartiest congratulations to our hard-working and ever creative maestro on this latest honor.

We look forward to having the great members of the Avalon String Quartet coming to Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall this Wednesday, Dec 9th at 7:30 p.m. with a fascinating and rigorous program of Britten, Weinberg (too rarely heard friend of Shostakovich) and Beethoven, Op. 130 with the Grosse Fugue.

A real treat to share the evening with the Mimesis Ensemble at Weill Recital Hall At Carnegie Hall last Saturday night. Congratulations to pianist Katie Reimer and 10 other talented musicians who created a tribute concert for Gunther Schuller, including a youthful work from his 20th year and a work from 1986 for bassoon and piano quintet. And Gunther sneaked in a little ragtime in the middle of that one!

Our concert at Carnegie Hall is TOMORROW!!!

We hope to see you there!!!

Tipping our hats to Charles Rosen

What a wonderful sendoff we finally had for Charles Rosen on Wednesday night at the CUNY Graduate Center across from the Empire State Building. Carol Archer, Henri Zerner and Constance Shuman all deserve great credit for bringing the event together. From musicians ( Jeremy Denk, Fred Sherry, Rolf Schulte and Nicholas Phan) and three brief speakers ( Richard Kramer, New York Review of Books editor Robert Silvers and longtime friend Henri Zerner) provided a memorable program. It’ s been 10 months yet Charles’ presence is still felt in so many places… and will for a long, long time to come.
