After ten years living undocumented in the United States, Chuy is deported to the small fishing town in Sinaloa where he grew up. But the place he returns to is no longer the same: violence and organized crime have reshaped everyday life.

There, he reconnects with Chano, his first love, now a feared hitman. As their relationship resurfaces, Chuy is forced to confront a difficult choice between love, survival, and the life he truly wants for himself.

Against the backdrop of the Venezuelan migration crisis, the documentary follows the harsh reality faced by families who traveled thousands of kilometers seeking stability in Chile, only to encounter hostility, violence, and exclusion.

Through powerful testimonies and striking cinematography, UNWELCOMED explores migration, xenophobia, displacement, and what happens when the promise of a safer future begins to disappear.

TAFFNY opens with the New York premiere of Paquito D’Rivera: From Carne y Frijol to Carnegie Hall, a portrait of the extraordinary life and career of Cuban-born musician Paquito D’Rivera, an 18-time GRAMMY and Latin GRAMMY Award winner, virtuoso musician, composer, and celebrated entertainer.

After defecting from Cuba in 1980 at considerable personal cost, D’Rivera built an extraordinary international career and became an immigrant success story whose restless musical curiosity has crossed genres, cultures, and generations.
Director Juan Mandelbaum and Paquito D’Rivera will be present for a Q&A following the screening.

Miguel brings his creativity, imagination, and unique visual language to our 13th edition, giving TAFFNY an image that celebrates what we love most: stories, cinema, creativity, and the extraordinary diversity of the Americas.

An award winning artist based in New York, Miguel founded AguijonFilms in 2008. His work has traveled to film festivals and has brought him to institutions including Yale University, Fairfield University, and CUNY to share his creative and animation process.

We are proud to congratulate co-founder and CUNY professor Juan Carlos Mercado on his election as a Corresponding Member of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language () — one of only five academics honored this year as “creators of recognized international prestige.”

Dean of the Division of Interdisciplinary Studies at CCNY’s Center for Worker Education , Juan Carlos has been recognized for his extraordinary academic career, his dedication to expanding educational access, and his leadership in the study, teaching, and international promotion of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture.

celebrates him as “a pioneer in expanding educational access and international cooperation,” highlighting his research on Spanish Florida and Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, which offers new perspectives on the cultural impact of Spanish colonization in the U.S.
