French-Senegalese star Mati Diop made history on Thursday when Atlantics became the first film made by a woman of African descent to be screened in the event's 72 year history.

Diop revealed she was "moved" but also "a little sad" at the achievement. "It's pretty late and it's incredible that it is still relevant," she said. "My first feeling to be the first black female director was a little sadness that this only happened today in 2019.

B**g Joon-Ho's "Parasite" takes the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, where Mati Diop claimed a historic win and Antonio Banderas won best actor.

As is the case with many representation issues, studio insiders say the lack of Latinx movie stars is rooted in industry preconceptions and broader cultural stereotypes that die hard. And because the Latinx audience is considered a loyal and unwavering force at the box office, there is no pressing need to program for that audience. As one studio exec puts it, Latinx moviegoers are "a sure thing."

Despite an audience that goes to the movies more than any other demo ("a sure thing," notes one studio exec), insiders say onscreen representation won't improve until Hollywood sheds some prejudices and takes a chance — "like they do all the time for white actors."

And as Margo Guernsey’s Councilwoman documentary shows, such a strategy is what helped make Carmen Castillo, a hotel housekeeper in Providence, RI, win her seat as councilwoman for the 9th Ward all the way back in 2011. Indeed, despite following Castillo’s first few years in local politics and a heated re-election campaign in 2014, this doc feels right at home in the current political climate. Castillo, a Dominican woman who first came to the United States in 1994 with three of her kids in tow, stands out as a champion for the working class in a city that, in her eyes, rarely serves her community.

The Dominican Republic’s film industry, with around 25 films produced per year and average budgets close to $1 million, stands out in the Central American and Caribbean region, where filmmakers are often forced to resort to guerrilla filmmaking techniques to get their films made.

Gente-fied is based on a digital series of the same name; both are created by first-generation Chicano writers Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chavez. Described as a love letter to the Latinx and Boyle Heights communities, the bilingual half-hour dramedy will follow its lead characters as they navigate identity, class and balancing insta-fame with translating memes for their parents.

Karrie Martin, J.J. Soria, Carlos Santos and Joaquin Cosio will star in the half-hour dramedy set in L.A.'s Boyle Heights neighborhood.

"The native-born, they went to go see 'Black Panther,' because they related to it," Esparza said. "They related to the historical issues that African Americans have had in the United States, because they've had a similar history ... They relate to those movies, and they go to them. So if you give them something that they can relate to, where they see themselves, well, we're going to make a lot more money."

Diversity in Hollywood films isn't just an important cultural shift, it's a lucrative business model. Theater owners at CinemaCon cite demand from moviegoers.
