Mixed Asian Media

Mixed Asian Media A collaborative media platform by mixed APIs, for everyone. To be mixed API is to be part of a diverse and growing population with many perspectives.

Mixed Asian Media (MAM) is a collective created by multiracial, mixed Asian/Pacific Islanders (API’s). We seek to build a community within this group through conversations of what it means to be of mixed Asian/Pacific Islander descent and find intersectionality in the search for our ever-evolving place in society. We provide a platform to explore pertinent experiences, build powerful relationships

, and discover sought-after clarity in the mixed-Asian narrative. We believe that representation and diversity matter in all mediums. From every issue of our magazine to an annual creative festival, we strive to capture mixed Asian/Pacific Islander stories and experiences through all of our current and future mediums.

Mixed Asian Media attended the “Wasian Meetup” in Central Park last weekend. 💜 We asked the organizers and some of the attendees how they felt about the word “Wasian.”

We believe there’s room at the table for everyone, including Asian adoptees, multiracial & multiethnic Asians, and beyond. Community grows when people feel seen, welcomed, and included.

Nevertheless, words have power, and we believe people should have access to the context and history behind them. Creating space for nuance, conversation, and understanding is part of building stronger community.

“Wasian” may be the internet’s favorite buzzword, but Mixed Asian identity is far bigger, deeper, and more diverse than one label.

At MAM, we center all mixed Asian, Pacific Islander, and Native Hawaiian experiences — including Blasian, Mexipino, Indo-Caribbean, hapa, multigenerational mixed identities, adoptee stories, and people who don’t identify with any label at all.

We’re not here to reduce our community into one aesthetic or one type of mixedness. We’re here to build space for the full spectrum of who we are. 🤝

Representation should reflect the diversity within our diversity.

Mixed Asian representation is diverse, layered, and global. Yet Hollywood continues to spotlight only a narrow version of what “mixed Asian” looks like.

There is room for Blasian stories, HispAsian stories, Black and Asian adoptees, Pacific Islander mixes, SWANA and Asian mixes, and so many more. Representation should reflect the full spectrum of our community — not just what feels safest or most familiar.

We are not a monolith.

“Is it 25%?”

In “Passing and Proving,” K.M. Gang writes about being 1/4 Chinese and white-passing — and the strange math that comes with it.

She knows her skin tone and hair texture shield her from the racism many Chinese and Asian people face. She doesn’t romanticize that harm. And yet, being misread as fully white can feel like a quiet erasure — like the part of her that matters most has to be announced, justified, or earned.

The essay wrestles with that contradiction:
benefiting from passing, while still feeling unseen. Taking pride in your heritage, while questioning whether you “count.”

For anyone who has ever measured themselves in fractions.

Have you ever felt both privileged and invisible at the same time? Talk to us in the comments below.
