Expanding the boundaries of live performance since 1980. It demonstrated PS122’s capacity as a laboratory for not just art, but community.

Founded by artists as Performance Space 122 in an abandoned school building at 150 First Avenue in the East Village, New York. Performance Space 122 began in 1980, emerging from a city struggling with high rates of poverty, crime, racial strife, and drugs, as well as the deaths of many vital artists and thinkers in the AIDS epidemic. In our theaters PS122 was able to foster an open and accessible

culture of aesthetic risk-taking and social experimentation by providing artists working in performance with a safe space to test their own creativity, express revolutionary ideas, and share artistic practices with adventurous audiences. Challenging and fun, PS122’s Open Movement created a social glue that nurtured many of the choreographers, dancers, performance artists, and anyone inspired enough to join in. The first decades of PS122 also succeeded in connecting audiences to vital provocateurs who catalyzed debates and social change at national and international levels. As decades passed the city became cleaner, safer, greener and more expensive, and the neighborhood gentrified. Although PS122 became an “institution” during this time, we also managed to retain our gritty non-conformist character and engage artists in a dynamic and supportive environment. PS122 continued to invest in ground-breaking artists and build our local, national, and international reputation, all the while navigating the waters of a recession, shifting expectations, and a major capital renovation of our home.

In order to circumvent the current healthcare industrial complex, Rena Anakwe offers marginalized communities opportunities for self-care in a world that too often pushes them aside, especially regarding mental health. Primarily, Anakwe works with sound, visuals, and scent, staging interventions in the form of “performance art rituals”, “sound and scent baths” and "audio visual collages" for: relaxation, reconnecting to nature and checking-in with oneself. Anakwe’s work focuses on creating alternatives to the existing system of clinical mental health care, by creating diasporic healing practices and tools, staged in places in which we gather for arts/entertainment and in the privacy of our own personal spaces.

Meet the Resident, Rj Eve Mertus .rj

Painter, photographer, and culinary artist Rj Eve Mertus came to The People's Space following its transformation into a mutual aid site, FREE CRIB 4 BLACK LIVES. Mertus, whose goal for long-term housing includes space to simply create, invite people, and show work, recalls, "The People’s Space gave me room to finally work and ... show the imagery of what I know.”

Following a brain injury, Mertus describes, "I lost a lot of cognitive skills… It was a rough patch in my life, and I’m trying to display that in my art, to give a sequence of how my life came to be. I’m putting my whole life on canvas. As a young Black gentleman showing memories as well as my outlook on life, I want to give others an outlet to not be scared of what people think.”

Meet the AIRs, Angel Robertson

With considerable experience in community work—having founded a program (LARA — Los Angeles Run(a)way Angels) helping houseless trans folks in Los Angeles move out of tents—Angel Robertson has been a vocal advocate for the necessity of housing for her, the other AIRs, and in turn other artists with similar experiences.

She says, "To make sure we’re okay is the first step for collective members—but then we all want to figure out who else needs the most help. This is a rare opportunity for independent artists. The overall goal is to actually give back with a house for artists and gear them towards a transitional future. I can’t honestly say we can fix anything but we can try to make it better for them by providing a place for developing themselves, knowing people in the collective have walked in their shoes already."

Danyele Brown is a performance and product design artist who seeks to further develop a trans-utilitarian practice by merging her artistic backgrounds to build a world of intentionality for trans women’s bodies and experiences.
❤️🖤💚
Brown says, “Living, for us, has to be understood as the work itself—in a way that does not exist for artists with resources and a place to stay… We need space for us to do what we need to do and to be the voices and agents of our own experiences. I want to help myself and my friends in a way that de-invisibilizes the work we’re doing all the time and the struggle we’re constantly engaged in.”

Help us provide housing for Black and trans, housing-insecure artists!

During the month of June, in the midst of the BLM protests in New York, Angel, Danyele, Donte, Rj, and Stev – the Artists in Residents (AIRs)—were invited by People’s Space — a group of artists from our “02020” initiative—to work with Performance Space New York. What started as a project to offer refuge for protesters quickly shifted to a mutual aid space for those facing houselessness. After securing temporary housing for the AIRs, it soon became apparent that the five artists needed a more permanent solution.

People’s Space and Performance Space are now helping the AIRs raise funds to collectively purchase a home outside of NYC, and to provide seed funding for their artistic careers. With your support, the AIRs will be able to secure both long-term housing for themselves and eventually other houseless, Black and trans artists.

Help us raise $60,000 by October 15 to lift up impacted communities and most of all, help keep them safe, sustained, and supported!
