Tired of your right hand fighting you on clarinet?

A recent consulting session brought up one common clarinet ergonomics issue worth talking about: the thumb rest.

Most stock thumb rests sit too low, and even adjustable ones often don’t go high enough to support a natural hand position.

That can lead to extra tension, awkward hand placement, and unnecessary strain while playing.

One simple fix is repositioning or replacing the thumb rest to bring the hand into a more balanced, comfortable setup.

It’s a small adjustment, but makes for a big impact.

Taking a closer look at a clever spring adjustment 🔬🎵

In this clip, we’re highlighting a thoughtful adjustment from another tech, who changed the spring mechanism on the F #/C # key and added a heavier spring, both of which helped give it a snappier, more responsive feel.

It’s a great example of how you sometimes need a more custom approach to get the instrument feeling exactly how the player wants.
