Before Issue 1 dropped in January 2017, there were 12+ years behind it — building, listening, learning the industry, and seeing the gap.

The working dog world needed a publication that treated the work, the dogs, and the people behind them with the seriousness they deserve.

That is what Working Dog Magazine was built to do.

Deputy Jon Samuelson of the LaPorte County Sheriffs Department is the officer in critical condition after being shot this morning (5/22/26) at Franciscan Hospital in Michigan City. There are official press releases with more details. We want to share this picture of Jon with K9 Bosco, and ask for prayers for Jon.

We have so many great pictures and videos of Jon along with Bosco, like this one, helping us shine a light on the community good done by those in law enforcement through ride-alongs, K9 demos, and videos highlighting local first responders. Jon is one of our Heroes.

In true hero fashion it seems Jon had stopped to help what appeared to be a stranded motorist, taking him to the hospital. That very person he helped is the one who later shot him.

No sense can be made of senseless acts. We turn to God with hope and prayers for healing for Jon. We ask you to look at this picture. To put a face to this heroes name if you did not know him and please… pray for Deputy Jon Samuelson, his family, and his brothers and sisters in the first responder family.

We talk a lot about starting dogs well.

The setup. The cue. The search. The reward.

But the way we end the work teaches something too.

A rushed ending can leave a dog wound up, unclear, or still mentally in the task. A better ending gives the dog a clean finish, a little clarity, and a chance to come down from the work.

Dogs need better endings.

Vehicle safety is about more than hot cars. Loose dogs, unsecured crates, shifting gear, airflow, exits, and backup plans can all affect the dog before, during, and after the ride.
