β¨ Meet the future leaders helping make Memphis shine! β¨
Memphis in May is proud to welcome our incredible 2026 "Maymaker" student Interns from Whitehaven High School!
This opportunity is a powerful example of what happens when partnership meets purpose. In 2025 Memphis In May introduced the first Junior Barbecue Cooking contest to the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. For students ages 9 to 17, youth barbecue teams from around the US came to compete for their shot at being crowned the first Junior Grand Champions, including four teams who represented Memphis-Shelby County Schools Division of College, Career, and Technical Education. This year through collaboration with Memphis-Shelby County Schools - MSCS and the City of Memphis Joint Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, we are investing in the next generation even further by creating pathways to growth, leadership, and real-world success.
In addition to six MSCS school teams competing in the barbecue competition this year and two teams from the City of Memphis' Joint Office of Youth Services, these talented students in this photo will gain hands-on experience building professional skills, and helping bring the spirit of Memphis in May to life through a "pilot" 8-week internship in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations and Event Management. They will get the opportunity to serve as apart of for the state of Tennessee's largest festival and fully bring you all content covering the 2026 Junior World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest.
When our schools, city, and community organizations work together, amazing things happen for the children in the City of Memphis! Thank you to Memphis In May CEO Mack Weaver, Memphis Mayor Paul Young, Superintendent Dr. Roderick Richmond, and Whitehaven Principal Dr. Vincent Hunter for ensuring Memphis youth continue to gain the necessary skills and experience to thrive and become productive members of society.
Please join us in celebrating these outstanding students as they learn, lead, and leave their mark this summer during Memphis In May!
