Workshop: Jamming 101 - Playing Well with Others

Workshop: Jamming 101 - Playing Well with Others This is an introductory workshop on the etiquette, process and nuances of joining in a jam session with other musicians. Available for any music festivals.

Have you witnessed people jamming together and wanted to join in, but were unsure how to go about it? Not certain how it worked or what all was going on? Have you participated in a jam session where you felt unwelcome or out of place? Have you had the impression that there are some “rules” as to what is going on, but you are not quite sure what the rules are? If you answered “Yes” to any of these,

then the “Jamming 101 – Playing Well with Others” workshop is for you. And even if you are experienced and think you know what jamming is, I suspect you could still learn a thing or two. We will discuss different types of jams, some general rules and guidelines to follow, etiquette and goals for jamming, etc. And we will jam some and have a lot of fun. If you can play three chords on your instrument, you will fit right in! This is a beginning workshop in jamming, but from experience, I know some people who have been playing for 50 years and could benefit from this class. Contact me here to schedule a workshop for your event. Bring your non-amplified instrument and a good attitude. I guarantee we will have fun.

This is going to start in less than two weeks. If your child plays an instrument, this is going to be a wonderful opportunity to begin "jamming" with other children in a safe, non-threatening environment where they are going to be successful and have a positive experience. I have been leading jams and playing music with youngsters for years. But this is a rare opportunity to participate in actual musical gatherings focused on young musicians. We are going to have so much fun. Come join us!

The Soldiers' Joy String Band will be playing Civil War songs at the Jennings County Historical Society event Sassafras Days. We will play from 10:00 to 2:00 next Saturday, April 22 at the Jennings County Courthouse in Vernon, Indiana

Remember those four guys from three points of the compass who entertained us with folk songs at several JCHC events over the past year? They've been practicing (something they say they hadn't gotten together to do for their performances) and decided to make the group's name Soldiers' Joy String Band.

Larry Wayt, Richmond area resident who is their connection to Jackson County, says they are thinking strongly about returning for the eighth grade Civil War Day in May. More details to come ...

Other members of the group are Bill Davenport of Louisville, Eric Jarboe of Jennings County, and Jim Wendel of Rush County.
