Heart surgery recovery was challenging both physically as well as emotionally.

In the months after surgery, I experienced what is often called cardiac depression.

It showed up as intrusive thoughts that constantly tried to convince me my life was over, I would never feel like myself again or I wouldn't be able to do the things I once loved.

It showed up as hyper-vigilance and hyper-awareness of every sensation and every sensation led back to fear wrapped with uncertainty. Constantly checking and monitoring my body, trying to convince myself I was fine.

And the hardest part? Trying to believe that life would somehow still hold joy, purpose, and meaningful moments beyond what I was experiencing in that uncertain season.

Healing happened slowly in the small moments practiced consistently every day. In the accidental rhythm that I had created without knowing. A rhythm, that I fiercely protect two years later.

Tea. Gentle Movement. Restorative Stillness. Nourishment. Warmth of the sun on my face. All of these became part of my morning rhythm, grounding me, comforting me, with tea being the anchor to it all. Not because I had some grand plan for recovery, but because they were small things I could do when everything else felt unkown.

If you're walking through a season of uncertainty, know this: You don't have to see the entire path forward to keep moving. This is your reminder that healing happens one small moment at a time.

After surviving something major, you begin to realize how much healing lives inside ordinary moments.

~ The sunlight through a kitchen window.
~ A quiet morning.
~ A warm cup in your hands.
~ A conversation with someone you love.
~ A slow evening without rushing.

You stop needing life to be constantly productive to believe it has value.

And maybe that’s one of the greatest lessons heart surgery has taught me.

That slowing down is not weakness, rest is not laziness and gentleness can actually be a form of strength.

Heart surgery changed my life. But strangely, it also gave me my life back. Because for the first time, I stopped racing through it.

It’s too much is what I hear my clients say. And I agree!

Our brains are not equipped for this- fatigue, overwhelmed, nervous system deregulation that then leads to increasing amounts of stress hormones like cortisol constantly being released. We’re trying to process all of these things that we were never meant to process at one time.
