We’ve been experiencing some unseasonably warm weather this spring and have already seen the Mylitta butterflies swarming the mustard and borage flowers. The “nitrogen fixing” peas are starting to spiral their way to the sky and among them some delicate natives make their way through the mass as well. Down below the addition of brassicas to the mix are gently aerating and breaking up the soil while up above they are shading out weeds.
The cows have already grazed a portion of this, adding nutrients to the soil through their waste and gently trampling down the spent forage to work its way back into the soil, feeding beneficial microbes and releasing nitrogen as it decomposes. In early June, right before planting, we will bring in our sheep to do the same.
