The Historic Reid House has been the setting for numerous weddings and receptions, parties, dinners, and Victorian teas. Adding historical significance to Matthews, it is one of the area's "best kept secrets."

The Nancy Reid House is a ca. 1890 late Victorian/Queen Anne style cottage located at 134 W. John Street, in the center of the Town of Matthews, NC - Government business district.

The house is named for the youngest daughter of Dr. Thomas Neely Reid and Mrs. Ellen Reid. Nancy Reid was born in this house in 1898 and lived there until her death in 1986. She was well-educated and served as a teacher for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for approximately 30 years. After Nancy's death, her family donated the house to the Matthews Historical Foundation, where it's currently available for special events.

Did you know that The Reid House, located at 134 West John Street, was built in 1890 by Edward Solomon Reid? It is one of the few remaining Victorian houses in the area. Mr. Reid sold the house to his sister Ellen in 1893, the year she married Dr. Thomas Neely Reid from Sharon Township, no relation to the Reid family from Matthews. Dr. Reid served the citizens of Matthews for over 55 years.

The house is named for Miss Nancy Reid, the youngest daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Ellen Reid. She was born in the house on January 9, 1898, and lived there until her death on January 25, 1986. She was well educated and taught in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System for 35 years. Mrs. Sarah Redd, a niece of Miss Nancy's, inherited the house upon her death. Mrs. Redd generously gifted the house and property to the Matthews Historical Foundation on December 31, 1987.
