Like so many of us, I grew up listening to The Whispers. They were one of my absolute favorite groups — mostly because my grandmother played them constantly. Their music was the soundtrack to my childhood.
When I started booking old school shows, I only really did it for my mom. No joke — I’d ask her who she wanted to see, and then I’d book the show, hook her up with tickets, give her the green room.. and turn it into a family party. Sure, I made a few bucks, but truthfully, I’d have done it just to break even. Sometimes I did.
Quick story: I had been doing Jeffrey Osborne shows for a while. One day I asked my mom who she wanted to see next. She said, “The Whispers.” I ran it by Jeffrey, and he said, “Absolutely.”
That led to our big night at the Greek Theatre in LA — May 2023. We sold 5,600 tickets. Incredible show. But even better was the next night: an intimate show in Arizona at Gila River Casino. No big guest list. Just me, the band, and a whole lot of time to hang out.
I spent the day with my grandmother’s favorite group, soaking in stories, jokes, and life lessons. I’ll never forget it.
Anyway, Mr. Walter made it a point to pull me to the side after the show & thank me for booking them. I noticed a lot of older bands had that habit. He told me he was shocked that such a young guy like me would be into working with “such old guys” like him & his group. He gave me a huge hug. The kind of hug only a grandfather could give. I cried (just a little) and he asked me to take a picture with him. Of course, I did.. (I wanted one but was too nervous to ask).
I can’t say I knew the guys deeply. I booked them a few more times, and started having someone else cover the shows, so I wouldn’t always be present.
Still… I’m really glad I told Walter I loved him. And he also told me the same.
Take a moment and think about the people who’ve impacted your life. The ones who’ve encouraged you. Meant something. If they’re still around — tell them. Don’t wait.
Long live Mr. Walter Scott. And long live the music that raised us ❤️
