We are heartbroken to share that Mark Smythe — a gifted composer, devoted educator, and warm-hearted colleague — passed away unexpectedly this weekend. After relocating from New Zealand, Mark attended the 2013 HMMA Composer Summit, where he was chosen to spend “A day with Jeff Beal.” This opportunity helped propel his career. He quickly built a distinguished body of work for film, shorts, and television, earned multiple HMMA nominations, served a term as COO of the Society of Composers & Lyricists, and was a guest presenter at the 2018 HMMA Gala (see video clip). Mark’s talent and generosity enriched our community — he will be greatly missed.

We congratulate the amazing and talented Ludwig Göransson, Ejae and Mark Sonnenblick on winning Oscars!! The score for SINNERS and the song "Golden" from Kpop Demon Hunters were winners at the 2025 HMMA! We love seeing this happen year after year!

🎶✨ At the Hollywood Music in Media Awards 2025, composer Jeff Beal delivered a heartfelt acceptance speech that captured the spirit of collaboration and courage.

“This film was a real gift… I was honored to tell this story,” he shared, reflecting on the thrill of working with world-class musicians—from the Los Angeles orchestra to the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, and even an extraordinary rebaba player in Doha.
But the most meaningful part, Beal emphasized, was celebrating Roya Mahboob—a trailblazer who taught herself coding in a country where girls weren’t allowed to study computers, and went on to form a girls’ robotics team that won gold. Having her in the room during the recording made the project unforgettable.

💙 A beautiful reminder that art, resilience, and community can change the world.
