In the weeks leading up to the festival, we are going to start sharing some of our great events that we are excited about this year.

One of our guests this year will be chess player, and author Katie Kormanik!

Join former top-100 U.S. women’s chess player Katie Kormanik for a reading from her new memoir, Adventures of a Chess Girl: Into the Depths of the Chess World and Back Again, followed by a Q&A, meet-and-greet, and book signing.

In this candid coming-of-age memoir, Katie revisits the years after college, when she was trying to figure out what came next. Amid financial stress, complicated family dynamics, and the uncertainty of early adulthood, chess became her anchor.

Alongside her International Master boyfriend, Katie found herself drawn deep into the world of elite chess—from parties with Hikaru Nakamura and Alexandra Botez to late-night post-tournament adventures. But ultimately, her story is about more than chess: it’s about ambition, identity, finding one’s way in the world, and why, for Katie, that meant leaving chess behind.
