Places & Homes – May the Soil Be Everywhere
Saturday, September 20, 2025 at 4:00 PM

Explore family, heritage, and the meaning of home through powerful storytelling.

May the Soil Be Everywhere follows filmmaker Yehui Zhao as she films her grandmother and excavates her family’s ancestral village in China’s Loess Plateau. Through performance, poetry, and animation, Zhao constructs a living archive of oral history, tracing four generations and chronicling the impact of war, famine, and urbanization.

The program also features Vertigo, exploring a rural village in Spain facing depopulation, and I Think He Told Me a Story, a reflective meditation on memory and narrative.

For fans of bold, boundary-pushing nonfiction cinema, this program is a must-see.

A Distorted Individual follows Individual Distortion after 18 years in the underground music scene as he pursues Indonesia’s most prestigious music awards, confronting challenges that test his identity and ambitions.

It is paired with The Helmet, a poetic exploration of loss and mystery across the North-South Korea border, and GIVE ME THE MONEY, an experimental documentary short hand-animated on Super 8mm exploring a trans nonbinary performer in Seattle’s underground punk scene.

This block features the world premiere of A Distorted Individual and promises to be one of the highlights of the festival.

Two powerful stories from Romania, both intimate and unforgettable.

The Song of Aida follows a Roma woman as she fights for freedom, independence, and a life beyond the camp where she grew up. Shot over more than a decade, it features footage from 2002, 2008, and 2014, along with poetic animations that illuminate her inner world.

Appalachia tells the tale of Leo, a 17-year-old biker, and Raisa, a pastor’s daughter in a small conservative village. Their love faces impossible obstacles from communitarianism and religious fanaticism.

🎟️ Celebrate these achievements of contemporary Romanian cinema at KCUFF. Admission is free. Reserve your tickets today!

One night she hits a winning streak that changes everything. It is Uncut Gems meets The Greasy Strangler and one of the funniest, most outrageous films of the year.

Paired with Beethoven's Great Great Great Great Great Grandchild, a hilarious tale of the last Beethoven descendant with no musical talent trying to cash in on their heritage.

Two films. Zero compromise. Pure underground cinema.

MÉCHANT! was shot on a shoestring budget in rural France and is everything KCUFF was built to showcase: bizarre, enigmatic, and endlessly creative. You have never seen anything like it.

It plays with All Beauty Queens Have Broken Bones, a poetic and unsettling vision of faith, family, and fractured dreams.

🚨 Do not miss this double feature. Admission is free. Reserve your tickets today
