CASTING ALL WOMEN- A SOLDIER’S PLAY- LOS ANGELES

The African American Theatrical Ensemble (AATE)is producing a staged table reading of its adaptation of A Soldier’s Play, a murder mystery that explores the complicated feelings of anger and resentment that some Black Americans have toward one another, and the ways in which many have absorbed attitudes held by White racists.

There will be one rehearsal on Tuesday, September 10th, 7 to 10 PM, with the staged reading taking place the following evening, on Wednesday, September 11th, at 7 PM in Los Angeles. Experience preferred but not required.

Union members will perform under 29 hour contract.

9 Black females, 22-50/3 Caucasian females, late 27-50

DAVENPORT- Black F, 27-35- Determined lawyer seeking the truth.
WATERS- Black F, 35-50- Serpentine dictator, bent on destroying anyone in the way of progress.
WILKIE- Black F, 30’s- Easily led underling, grasping for power.
COBBS- Black F, 20’s- Afro-Latina lover.
SMALLS- Black F, 20’s- Diminutive, seemingly innocent mastermind.
C.J.- Black F, 20’s- Powerful mystic, with the power of song.
Ellis- Black F, 20’s- Funny lady adept at physical comedy- think Lucille Ball
PETERSON- Black F, 20’s- Militant activist tired of the system’s version of justice.
HENSEN- Black F, 20’s- Alcoholic mother, separated from her family.
TAYLOR- White F 40’s- “Differently-abled” Veteran, unsure what to make of a changing society.
BYRD- White F, 30’s- Naive doctor, helpless to cure the dis-ease around her.
WILCOX- White F, 20’s- Abusive cop, frustrated with political correctness.

The 2020 Joshua Tree International Film Festival (JTIFF)’s on-going mission is to provide a platform for independent and noteworthy films and filmmakers to connect with industry professionals and the diverse audience that recognizes the Morongo Basin as an oasis of creativity, art and culture throughout the international arts community. With special focus and support for projects that encompass the diverse vision of cinema and bring to light the perspectives of indigenous cultures from around the world, we hope to cast the widest possible net to grow future generations of filmmakers and movie goers in the Morongo Basin and beyond.
