Christian Sprenger, ASC, and James Whitaker, ASC, won Emmys for their work on Widow's Bay and DTF St. Louis at the 78th Emmy Awards, held September 5–6 at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live. Sprenger received Outstanding Cinematography for a Half-Hour Series for Widow's Bay Episode 6, "Our History," the first production to use the restored ASC Todd-AO lenses. Whitaker was honored for Cinematography for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for DTF St. Louis.

Former ASC president Mandy Walker, ASC, ACS, introduced the American Society of Cinematographers to six visiting students at the ASC Clubhouse this week, opening a panel discussion organized with the Society's Education & Outreach Committee. The students, 7th through 11th graders from Outlast Arts & Education, a Lakota arts and education program for Native Americans, traveled from Pine Ridge and Rosebud, South Dakota, on funds they raised themselves.

Panelists including Michael Goi, ASC, and Michael Pessah, ASC, discussed what led them to cinematography, the responsibilities of directing, and the role of story in shaping filmmaking decisions. The visit also included a screening of the ASC reel, three of the students' own films, and a tour of the Clubhouse, Education Center and camera collection, including the Wizard of Oz three-strip Technicolor camera. Lunch was provided by Mark Bender and NANLUX.

RED hosted an evening at the ASC Clubhouse on September 3 honoring this year's Emmy-nominated cinematographers. The event welcomed nominees along with the artists and collaborators behind the year's nominated television images.

Guests gathered for cocktails, dinner, and conversation at the Clubhouse on in Hollywood.

The next session runs September 22–25, 2026, in Hollywood — a four-day intensive built for cinematographers working toward an intermediate-to-advanced skill set, covering lighting, camera technique, and current workflow practices. All necessary equipment is provided.

Confirmed instructors are Don Burgess, ASC (Forrest Gump, Contact, Cast Away), Marcell Rév, ASC, HCA (Euphoria, Malcolm & Marie, The Story of My Wife), and Tari Segal, ASC (Interior Chinatown, Long Bright River, Margo’s Got Money Troubles).

Michael Goi, ASC presented a special ASC Magic Hour screening of Forgotten Silver on August 19 at the ASC Clubhouse, joined by special guest Nancy Schreiber, ASC. The 1995 mockumentary was directed by Peter Jackson and Costa Botes, with cinematography by Alun Bollinger, NZCS. ASC Magic Hour — An Inspirational Screening Series celebrates original pieces of filmmaking and the craft behind them.

Arseni Khachaturan, ASC has joined the American Society of Cinematographers as a new member, bringing a body of work that includes award-winning collaborations with directors Luca Guadagnino, Dea Kulumbegashvili, and Arie and Chuko Esiri.

The Los Angeles-based, Belarusian-born cinematographer first learned to shoot, develop and print film from his mother before studying briefly at the Belarusian State Academy of Arts and relocating to New York City. His credits include the features The Drama and the upcoming The Chaperones, the series The Idol, and music videos for Travis Scott, The Weeknd and Talking Heads.

Last week at the ASC Clubhouse, cinematographer Brett Pawlak discussed Spider-Man: Brand New Day during the ARRI Afternoon event, in a conversation moderated by Valentina Caniglia, ASC. Reteaming with director Destin Daniel Cretton, Pawlak drew on the comics to build a grounded look pairing saturated reds and blues with deep, inky blacks, shot on the Alexa 265 with modified Panaspeed optics.

Ed Lachman, ASC received the Cinematography Legend Award at the Cine Gear Expo Awards of Excellence, alongside Caleb Deschanel, ASC (Legacy Lifetime Award) and M. David Mullen, ASC (Karl Kresser Heart of the Community Award). The ceremony was emceed by ASC associate member and AC Technical Editor Jay Holben and featured presenters Hoyte van Hoytema, ASC, FSF, NSC; Robert Legato, ASC; and John Simmons, ASC.
