16th Annual Lander Film Festival to Begin with Short Film Competition

During the workshop, entrants will receive a unique line of dialogue that must be incorporated into their five-minute film. This will provide an interesting challenge for the participants, who only have ten short days to write, produce and edit their submissions.Cash prizes and trophies will be given to the first, second and third place winners in each division. Filmmakers interested in participating can visit the official Lander Film Festival website for detailed guidelines and to sign up: www.landerfilmfestival.com

“The required line of dialogue is a unique component of the Lander Film Festival,” said Dr. Robert Stevenson, chair of the Lander Film Festival and professor of Journalism at Lander. “Our filmmakers have to think outside the box, and in many cases completely re-work ideas they may have been considering.”

All are welcome and encouraged to participate, regardless of prior experience in filmmaking. There are three divisions for the short film competition: High School, College and Open Division. The registration fee is $20 for the College and High School Division, and $25 for the Open Division. This can be paid through the day of the kickoff workshop.

“We are excited to once again welcome filmmakers of any skill level to join us, whether for their first time or for the 16th time,” said Stevenson. “Our festival continues to be an excellent learning opportunity for our Lander students, as well as our greater community.”

A full week of exciting lectures and events will take place beginning Mar. 17. The festival will culminate with the short film screening and award ceremony on Saturday, Mar. 21 at 4 p.m. in the Abney Cultural Center Auditorium.

As a recipient of the SC Humanities Grant for the Lander Film Festival, I ask you to carefully consider this action alert which I just received:

Late last night, Wednesday, April 2, all state humanities councils received official notice under the signature of National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Acting Chair Michael McDonald informing us that all awarded grants including our vital 5-year General Operating Grants and other program-specific awards have been canceled in their entirety, effective as of April 1.

The loss of NEH funding will be devastating to the ability of South Carolina Humanities and all state humanities councils to serve communities, provide high quality programs, and generate public humanities initiatives that are enriching for the state.

As our grantees and partners, you know how valuable the work we do is because it directly supports the work you do!

We need every humanities supporter to make their voice heard! Here are concrete, effective actions you can take NOW:

STEP 1: Call or message your senators and representatives and urge them to protect NEH and humanities councils. You can use the script available here: https://schumanities.org/advocacy-action-alert/.

STEP 2: Share this action alert on social media and send it directly to five people in your network and ask them to take action as well.

STEP 3: Join the Federation of State Humanities Councils’ public mailing list to receive updates as the situation progresses and learn how you can support humanities councils.
Subscribe

STEP 4: Write an op-ed letter to the editor for your local newspaper explaining why humanities councils are important and the impact these federal dollars have in your state and community.

On April 3, 2025, SC Humanities learned that the Department of Government Efficiency is targeting the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and has
