Dear Students and Colleagues,

The Seton Hill University community is devastated and heartbroken by the massacre at the Tree of Life Synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh that took the lives of eleven members of the Synagogue and wounded six others, including congregants and police officers. Some of our students, faculty, staff and administrators have friends and family in the congregation and in the neighborhood. Members of our community have attended services at Tree of Life. Through the years, the Synagogue has been part of programming offered through Seton Hill’s National Catholic Center for Holocaust Education.

As a Catholic university, we are especially disturbed by the hatred exhibited toward a house of worship. We stand with our brothers and sisters of the Jewish community. We condemn all acts of anti-Semitism, hate, and violence.

The Seton Hill community will come together for a Memorial Service on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at 12:45 p.m. in Saint Joseph Chapel. Please note classes are cancelled between 12:45 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. I invite you to join us as we acknowledge our common humanity, pray for the victims and the consolation of their families and all those who have been traumatized, and seek peace in our world and in our hearts.

Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to the victims and all those affected by this horrible tragedy.

Thank you for all you do each day to advance Seton Hill's mission.

Sincerely,

Mary

The Pennsylvania Association for Marriage and Family Therapists (PAMFT) would like to thank Senator Killion, his staff, the Pennsylvania legislature and Governor Wolf for passing SB530. After a 20-year effort, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists and other licensed mental health providers can now officially, and with legal authority, diagnose mental disorders and practice independently, providing further protection to the public.

Pennsylvanians deserve the best mental health care available and SB530 brings our licensing regulations to the highest standard, protecting our most vulnerable populations from unethical and unlicensed individuals.
As states across the county update their licensing statutes to include legal authority to diagnose, SB530 ratifies Pennsylvania Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT’s) long standing authority to
accurately evaluate, and effectively treat, Pennsylvanians that depend on them for therapeutic healing.

Clarifying the state laws for LMFTs to diagnose, and requiring licensure for independent practice, will further encourage Pennsylvania legislators to follow the lead of other states to include LMFTs as Medicaid
Providers in Pennsylvania.

As the stigma of seeking treatment for mental health issues continues to diminish, more people will seek professional treatment in all parts of Pennsylvania.

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics states that by 2026, the field of Marriage and Family Therapy is expected to grow by twenty-three percent. SB530 ensures that Pennsylvania MFTs will be able to continue to increase at the same growth rate of other states, ensuring continued access to quality and safe mental
health care for the public as demand increases.

SB530 benefits Pennsylvania schools looking to reduce barriers to learning due to insufficient access to mental health care. Schools that struggle to find sufficient mental health providers to assist in their facilities, now have greater access to licensed MFT’s systemic approach and solutions.

LMFTs are uniquely qualified to help teachers, administrators and students reduce barriers to learning due to insufficient access to mental health care. LMFTs offer an integrated philosophy, including family and school, to help children and teens reduce emotional and behavioral issues to increase success in school.

The signing of SB530 is a victory for Mental Health Care in Pennsylvania providing our state with continued access to outstanding treatment from Marriage and Family Therapists.

Greeting PAMFT Members.

I’ve just returned from AAMFT’s Leadership Symposium in Seattle where I met with AAMFT Board and staff to discuss next steps for the profession of marriage and family therapy, and how we can continue to support MFTs in Pennsylvania.

US News and World Reports just named MFTs #4 in Best Social Service Jobs and the US Bureau and Statistics states that the employment of marriage and family therapists is projected to grow 23 % from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. As MFTs in Pennsylvania we need to be prepared as our industry grows, and PAMFT is committed to supporting all of you.

Good News for PAMFT

Geographical Interest Network

Though it seems as though the transition from AAMFT Pennsylvania Division to a Geographical Interest network has been at a snail’s pace, our board worked tirelessly identifying what would be best for our division and MFTs in Pennsylvania. Through SWOT analysis, membership surveys, budget analysis and scrupulous report of our legislative concerns for the next five years, we applied to transition to a Geographical Interest Network with AAMFT.

We are excited to share that we received confirmation from AAMFT that our application for Pennsylvania Association of Marriage and Family Therapists has been accepted. We will operate much the same as we have in the past, but ultimately with less administrative responsibilities. We have begun the long process of closing the corporation and will soon operate under the umbrella of AAMFT Networks.

While AAMFT is committed to the Profession of Marriage and Family Therapy, the new PAMFT interest network will focus on the clinician. We’ve simply altered our name to embrace Therapists, instead of Therapy. We are excited to promote and support our talented MFTs in Pennsylvania.

OPT-IN

Please be aware that the dues structure has changed for AAMFT. Membership in PAMFT is no longer automatic. You must OPT-IN by choosing membership in PAMFT. PAMFT is funded only through membership dues. In order to continue the activities and legislative support we have provided we must continue our active membership. We have lowered the membership dues to $50 for Clinical Fellows.

If you already paid your dues but forgot to opt in, No problem! You can easily show your support for PAMFT and take advantage of all of our great benefits simply by calling AAMFT Member Services at 703-838-9808 and indicating you want to add on Pennsylvania!
