OUR COMMUNITY HELPS MAKE THE MEMORIES
Some places are more than buildings. They're part of a community's story.

Montana ExpoPark has evolved alongside Great Falls, bringing generations together for fairs, livestock exhibitions, sporting events, concerts and celebrations.
In 1979, Four Seasons Arena opened, helping expand the fairgrounds' role as a year-round entertainment destination.

Then, on January 13, 1989, the Northern Montana State Fairground Historic District was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing the architectural and historical significance of this treasured community landmark.
From historic exhibition halls to modern event spaces, Montana ExpoPark continues to connect the past with the present.

The buildings hold the history. The people make the memories.

Thank you, Great Falls, for being part of our story.

ARCHITECTURE WORTH CELEBRATING

Have you ever stopped to admire the architecture at Montana ExpoPark?
Two of our most recognizable historic buildings, the Mercantile and Fine Arts buildings, are beautiful examples of Art Deco design.

With their dramatic entrances, bold geometric shapes and distinctive architectural details, these buildings reflect the style of the 1920s and 1930s.

They were designed to make an impression—and nearly a century later, they still do!
The Mercantile and Fine Arts buildings are part of the historic fairgrounds district recognized for its architectural and community significance.

Next time you're visiting Montana ExpoPark, take a moment to look up. There's history in every detail.

HISTORY LIVES HERE

The 1930s brought a remarkable transformation to the Great Falls fairgrounds.
As the fair grew, new buildings were constructed to showcase the industries, agricultural traditions and talents that defined Montana.

In 1931, architect A. V. McIver designed livestock exhibition barns, including facilities for poultry, sheep and hogs. The Trades and Industries Building followed in 1932, reflecting the fair's expanding role in showcasing Montana's economy and ingenuity.
These buildings were more than exhibition spaces. They were places where neighbors gathered, producers shared their work and communities celebrated their accomplishments.

And decades later, their story is still part of Montana ExpoPark.
What do you remember most about the livestock barns or Trades and Industries Building?

HISTORY LIVES HERE

Before the Montana State Fair became the tradition we know today, one building was already helping shape the future of the Great Falls fairgrounds.

In 1919, the Montana Livestock Pavilion—now known as the Heritage Building—was constructed. Designed by Great Falls architect George H. Shanley, it became an important part of the grounds' agricultural heritage.

Its distinctive architecture would influence the design of other buildings added in the years that followed.

More than a century later, the Heritage Building remains a reminder of the farmers, ranchers, exhibitors and families who helped build this tradition.

Over 100 years of history. Generations of memories. And the story continues.

Do you have a memory of the Heritage Building? We'd love to hear it!

DID YOU KNOW? Montana ExpoPark's History Goes Back More Than 100 Years!

Long before the concerts, rodeos, trade shows and events we know today, Montana ExpoPark was already making history in Great Falls!

The story began in 1919 with the construction of the original Livestock Pavilion. In 1926, Cascade County purchased the fairgrounds, and after five years of planning and development, the first Northern Montana Fair opened in 1931.

That first fair welcomed a reported 129,617 visitors on opening day!

Through the Great Depression, the fairgrounds continued to grow, adding beautiful Art Deco buildings that remain part of our community's history today.

In 1989, the historic fairgrounds district earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its architectural significance and contributions to Montana's agricultural heritage.

From generations of farmers and ranchers showcasing their livestock to unforgettable concerts, rodeos, sporting events and family traditions, Montana ExpoPark has been bringing people together for nearly a century.

Let's keep making History!
