The Golden State Bonsai Federation held it’s annual Convention this year in Burbank CA. I’ve personally have been waiting for this event since well… the last convention! This year’s headliners were Dave DeGroot, Suthin Sukosolvisit, and Peter Warren. There were many workshops, excursions such as a California Juniper dig, sales area, Halloween costume party, and of course a wonderful exhibit of bonsai trees. Perhaps the thing we all enjoyed most was not only seeing magnificent bonsai trees but the wonderful company of friends in the community!

Nisei week took place from August 10-18 2013. This is a wonderful week long festival that featured Japanese music, food, Gyoza eating contests, beauty queens, and of course Nan Pu Kai’s annual show! This year my kids and I got to enjoy this wonderful show for about 12 minutes before they started touching all the show trees! I managed to grab some beautiful photos of the trees in the show

Kenji has been practicing bonsai for over thirty years. He is sensei to many of our instructors. Kenji has spent a majority of his time In Japan studying the art. He traveled from a distance to donate his time and energy to our club. Due to his popularity and insane schedule Ko Yu Kai members met on the first Wed. of July instead of our regular 3rd Wed. and boy was it worth it! Kenji was like a treasure trove of information bottled in a soda can bursting at every second! He had so much information in that talented brain of his I couldn’t write fast enough to keep up! His specialty is pines, and right off the bat he explained how hard it was to create a truly magnificent pine. Although he enjoys the informal upright styles he focuses on the traditional formal uprights because they are so hard to achieve! Kenji has been growing black pine from seed literally in tofu containers because he ran out of training pots! In this little container he managed to grow a black pine not only in record time but flawlessly candled and insane trunk girth! The trunk must have been an inch in less than 4 years! Kenji explained the energy in a tree and how each branch will divide as each branch grows out. He emphasized cutting the smaller weaker candles first then cutting the larger stronger candles around Mid July. The care of your younger trees is the same as your children they need food and water to eat and grow! Overall it was a wonderful demonstration! It was just too much info to explain in one newsletter, if you have questions I can re-draw Kenji’s diagram of branches for you! Thanks again Kenji we know you spend over 7 months a year away from home to promote bonsai and we all thankyou!

Going once, going twice, and sold to the lucky winner! Was the theme of our May meeting. Our very own Gary Lai volunteered to be the honorary auctioneer. Harley kept the mob in check making sure winning bids were correctly recorded. Neil ran back and forth making sure Gary never stopped working! Members donated trees, pots, tools, and I could have sworn I saw a kitchen sink! As you all know prices for raffle items, postage, and supplies have gone up in recent years. Peter Macasieb volunteered to style a couple trees from his own collection in which we auctioned off. Among the more notable items included Peters twisted yamadori style shimpaku. This cascading tree was trained as a young whip, Peter wired the boring out of it and created a truly unique style bonsai! Gary donated a elm cutting that he had started many years ago. The parent tree came from an auction, how fitting its offspring gets donated to an auction! This tree must have had close to a 2.5 to 3 inch trunk; it was styled as a broom, and potted in a nice drum pot. I’ve been to many auctions in the past and have to admit Gary did a phenomenal job! There was no time to chat, Gary was so fast and efficient at one point Leila had to tell him to take a break! We were about to finish the raffle in record time! Not surprising coming from Gary who holds the club record for fastest demo! Heck if I had handed Gary one of my kids he would have auctioned her off in a split second! Yes folks it was that insane! A huge thanks goes out to all members who came to bid, members who ran the auction, and most of all members who donated an items. I’m proud to say we collected enough funds to hold us through until the end of 2011!

Koyu Kai members started off March’s meeting with new business. We’ve decided that Ko Yu Kai is a Shohin and Mame club! Members also discussed possible membership costs increase from $15 to $20 due to increase postage and raffle item costs. On with the show! Our very own Leila Kusumi brought an army of Shohin Junipers, she lined them up, and made them watch as she demonstrated on 2 elms. These 2 elms were decent looking trees with great rootage. The trees had straight trunks and a full top. Leila decided to flat cut them with the help of her lovely assistant Mel Ikeda! After the trees were flat cut with the intention of turning them into smaller shohin trees, Leila put a Styrofoam cup with wet towels/cotton around the wound to keep it moist. Once buds start to break the moist towel/cotton can be taken off. The buds will sprout because they simply have nowhere else to go! Don’t try this technique at home kids! It only works on certain trees as Leila was describing. A friend of hers tried it on a Trident maple and the tree never budded out! Leila broke the record for fastest demo! She then went and passed out her workshop junipers so all could work on them. The trees were pruned and wired. They started to resemble shohin and from the looks of it are future masterpieces in the making! Leila graciously donated all her trees and time to our club. As almost we recognize Leila as a valued member and a generous individual! All workshop trees were entered into our raffle with the rule that no member could win twice. All the trees were raffled off to new owners and only time will tell who walked away with the next show piece!
