Please join us this Friday, March 1st, as we commemorate TWO significant achievements—the 3 year anniversary of Out of Harm's Reach and the soft launch of the IDEA Alachua syringe exchange program.

We express our deepest gratitude to all who have supported us including, our partner organizations, all of our donors and funders, and each of our members and volunteers over the last three years. Thank you for your encouragement and your contributions that allow us to continue our work within our community.

Organizations and individuals who are interested in collaborating with OOHR/IDEA Alachua are encouraged to attend this event, as well as any community members who may have questions or want to learn more about the programs and services we offer.

Those of you who cannot make it to the event may contact us at [email protected] or 352-559-9948.

We look forward to seeing all of you this Friday!

Thin gold lines form a square frame around the image text with a delicate line drawing of flowers and leaves overlapping the top right corner of the frame. The IDEA Alachua logo—a gold line drawing of a hand with a vine tattoo holding a poppy flower—intersects the bottom left corner of the frame. Next Saturday, December 23rd, we are joining Grace Grows and the Volunteer Department with GRACE Marketplace for our second year hosting Holiday Extravaganza!! at GRACE Marketplace for people experiencing homelessness.

We are filling backpacks with blankets, treats, and essential items to distribute in the morning and having a movie marathon with snacks and drinks afterwards. We expect to serve a few hundred people throughout the day and could always use more hands and donations.

If you would like to donate items or get involved please email the Volunteer Coordinator, Leigh, at [email protected]

Join us this year on World AIDS Day for a community resource fair at GRACE Marketplace until 3pm. We’re set up on the basketball court with other local service providers and are offering anonymous 20 minute oral HIV tests, Narcan, fentanyl test strips, and other free resources from our tent.

While we hold space on this day for the millions of lives lost over the years we also stand with our community to advocate for accessible and equitable testing, treatment, and prevention services as well as the removal of barriers for historically marginalized communities.

It seems appropriate on this day to share also that Out of Harm’s Reach (with the support and sponsorship of the Florida Harm Reduction Collective) will be working on developing and operating IDEA Alachua, a Syringe Service Program which will provide safer use materials and wraparound support services (including anonymous rapid HCV testing) in Alachua County. Throughout that process we will work to center the voices of impacted people and collaborate with other leaders, stakeholders, and service providers to develop programs that fit the specific needs of our community.

We had a lot of great conversations today during the Gainesville Overdose Prevention Plan Community Symposium (hosted by GFR's Community Resource Paramedicine Program) about some of the data we were able to review regarding substance related overdoses in the city. We're definitely excited about the direction this action plan is heading in!

We are incredibly honored and thrilled to announce that Out of Harm's Reach was selected as one of the recipients for the recent SSP grant!

Funding will be used to purchase supplies required to continue providing essential harm reduction services to our community and we are endlessly appreciative of the support from their foundation, our private donors within the community, and our partner organizations (both local and otherwise) who have assisted us throughout the development of our programs over the past two and a half years.

We couldn't do what we do without you all!

Please donate if you're able to! The Florida Harm Reduction Collective Inc currently offers a FREE and anonymous mail order Narcan and HIV self test distribution program for the state of Florida making these resources available for people who are unable to access them otherwise locally.

Since their current legalization, the Collective is working on adding fentanyl test strips to their mail order program as well! In order to do so they must first raise the funds needed to purchase these tests in bulk so that they can launch a pilot program to show potential funders the need and efficacy of this addition.

The Collective also sends additional information on local resources along with whatever supplies are ordered through their program to spread awareness on other organizations across the state.

Making fentanyl test strips more accessible to people will greatly reduce the risk of accidental fentanyl overdoses and allow people to make more informed decisions about their substance use.

Please share and/or donate!

We are working on setting up recurring and free virtual Narcan training events which would cover opioid overdose recognition, prevention, and response actions. If you have the ability, we ask that you complete this brief survey (link in comments) about what days and times work best for you to attend these online training events and would appreciate any additional feedback or suggestions you might have as well. We will post more details about the events in the near future!

This is one of those posts we hope to never have to make and it's with a heavy heart that I'm sharing the loss of one of our volunteers, my friend, my coworker, Deane.

Deane reached out to me shortly after I started Out of Harm's Reach to volunteer with us and quickly became someone I came to depend on for help. He was a strong advocate for harm reduction and his work was significantly impactful. This one hurts and he will be dearly missed by all of us.
