At 10:17am on March 20, 2025, Warren Beatty's "Heaven Can Wait" character, football quarterback Joe Pendleton, was slated to reach his final destination in the classic 1978 movie. So today, after nearly 50 years, multiple bodies, and many (many!) awards and nominations later, Heaven is no longer waiting -- Joe is finally at rest.

Nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Adapted Screenplay, this lauded movie and its character-driven script are still fun to explore. Here's an excerpt about Joe's first trip to heaven from the fabulous script written by Beatty and the iconic Elaine May:
-------
JOE
Wait a minute -- I'm not supposed to be here.
JORDAN
But you are here.
JOE
Then you guys made a mistake....
JORDAN
(to Joe)
Joe, if you don't take your turn, the line cannot move. No one can complete his journey. Do you think that's fair?
JOE
I'm not supposed to be fair. If this is heaven, *you're* supposed to be fair. *I* didn't make the mistake.
ES**RT
This is not heaven -- this is a Way Station and there is no mistake.
JOE
Well, I'm not taking my turn. Because you guys aren't fair -- you just wanna look good.
He jogs off.
Jordan stares after him. There is a pause.
JORDAN
Check it.
ES**RT
What?
JORDAN
The rules of human nature apply even here. One of them states that the probability of one make being right increases in direct relation to the intensity with which others try to prove him wrong. Check it.
EXT. WAY STATION
ES**RT
(to Attendant)
A check-out, please, on Joseph Pendleton. When is he due to arrive at this Way Station?
EXT. WAY STATION
There is the SOUND of a TICKER-TAPE-like instrument.
ATTENDANT
'Pendleton, Joseph. Due to arrive at 10:17 A.M., March 20th, of the year 2025.'
-------
And that's today.

Want to have some fun?
Honor Joe Pendleton's long awaited arrival in heaven by googling "heaven can wait script pdf" and finding the early draft dated "6/28/77." Then cue up the classic movie and read along -- you'll see how even the best stories go through revisions -- lots and lots of revisions. ;)

Erin go bragh!
How many times will we hear this today? We say it a lot around here (plenty o' Irish in the Ninja fam!) But... what, exactly, does it mean?

"Erin" is Gaelic in origin -- it's an Irish word for “Ireland.”

“Go bragh” (or “go brách”) means "forever" or “til the end of time.”

Put 'em together and what have you got? "Ireland Forever!"

So, Happy St. Patricks Day! And... Ninja go bragh! 😆

When you write for work, it can be easy to forget that writing can be fun.

Today at Writing Ninja, we just wanted to remind you to do a little "fun" writing -- just for the love of it -- because today is “I Love to Write Day.”

So whether you usually spend your days writing a movie script... or blog posts for your small business... or social media posts... or newsletters... why not take a moment to journal, write a couple of lines for a story, or create a jaunty lil haiku!

How decadent: a few minutes to enjoy writing – just for the love of it. Let's do it! 😀
