Known as the Mexican Folkloric Dance Adjudication Festival in 2024, Pasos Midwest renames this event with a name that encapsulates what this adjudicated festival is all about. Pasos Midwest is a gathering of steps—each one rooted in tradition, carrying rhythm, and pointing forward. This festival, rooted in movement and culture, bridges generations through Mexican folkloric dance. Our created brand

honors the artistry of the communities who shaped it while inviting new audiences to join in. Pasos Midwest, hosted & organized by Ballet Folklorico de Wayne State University, will include 2 days of workshops with renowned Mexican folkloric dance instructors and a one day adjudicated panel (competition) that is open to the public.

🌟MEET THE MAESTROS🌟

Manuel Hernández is a dancer and choreographer specializing in Mexican folkloric dance, with additional experience in flamenco and contemporary dance. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Performing Arts for Dance Expression from the University of Guadalajara, where he developed his artistic and technical foundation.
His rich and diverse career has taken him around the world. He has performed in Europe twice with the company Sonidos y Movimientos de México, serving as both dancer and artistic director at the “Les Cultures Du Monde” Festival in Gannat, France. He has also danced nine times at the “Mexican Fiesta” in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and has performed on prestigious stages such as Mexico City’s Auditorio Nacional and Foro Boca del Río.

Beyond performing, Manuel is a dedicated dance educator who has taught workshops across Mexico and the United States, including in California and Wisconsin. He developed a teaching method titled “Al ritmo del huapango” (“To the Rhythm of Huapango”), designed to help folkloric dancers explore the Huapango Huasteco style.

Current Projects:
Manuel is currently a company dancer with the show Espectáculo Jarocho, a producer, creative artist, and dancer with the collective Flamencorocho, and part of the production staff for the show Swim Swim, where he manages audio and lighting. He also directs the folkloric dance group “Tlaxomulli” under the Department of Culture of Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, Jalisco.

🌟MEET THE 2025 MAESTROS🌟

Paola Alejandra Avilés Reyes was born in Calkiní, Campeche, Mexico. From a young age, she showed a deep passion for dance and the arts, which guided her professional and academic path. She completed her basic education in her hometown and later earned a degree in Art Education from the Instituto Campechano’s School of Artistic Education. In 2015, she obtained a Master’s degree in Educational Integration from the National Pedagogical University (UPN) in Calkiní.

Her artistic career began in 2009 as a dancer with the Gran Ballet Folklórico del Estado de Campeche, where she performed until 2013.

She now is an artistic instructor of the Academia de Danza “O’koot” in Calkiní, training new generations of dancers since 2013, which her father founded 40 years ago. She has also taught the folkloric group “Ko’ox O’koot”.

Paola has also taught Artistic Expression and Appreciation at the Normal School for Preschool Education (2014–2017) and served as an Art Education teacher at the “Francisco G. Torres” Primary School (2017).

She has taught numerous folk dance workshops throughout Mexico and the United States — in Yucatán, Coahuila, California, Texas, Nevada, Washington, and Colorado — focusing on traditional dances from Campeche such as El Sarao, Fiestas del Palmar, and Carnaval.

A dedicated promoter of Mexican folk culture, Paola has actively participated in the National Congresses of the Mexican Folk Dance Teachers Association (A.N.M.D.P.M. A.C.) since 2009, attending events in multiple Mexican states and in U.S. cities such as Dallas and Fresno.

Throughout her career, she has received numerous certificates and awards recognizing her teaching, workshops, and contributions as a dance competition judge.

With a strong academic background, extensive
stage experience, and deep cultural commitment, Paola Avilés Reyes stands out as a leading figure in the teaching and promotion of Mexican folkloric dance.

🌟MEET THE 2025 MAESTROS🌟

Samuel Cortez, a celebrated Mexican dance artist, has been a pivotal figure in revitalizing the folklórico dance scene in the United States. Born in Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico, Cortez began his dance training at the age of five and has directed several dance companies over the course of more than three decades.

As the Artistic Director of Los Lupeños de San José and founder of the FOLKLOREADA Festival, Cortez has led numerous international tours, bringing the richness of Mexican dance to stages around the world. His exceptional artistry has been recognized through multiple international competitions and accolades, including the prestigious Izzie Award and Choreographer of the Year – Chicago, honoring his contributions to the promotion of Mexican culture in the United States.

In addition to his artistic work, Cortez is an accomplished researcher, having recently presented his work on Alta California, exploring and staging historical regional dance traditions.
With a Bachelor’s degree in Mexican Folk Dance and a Master of Fine Arts, Cortez continues to inspire as a choreographer, dance educator, and performer. He is an active member of organizations such as IIDDMAC and ANMDPM, contributing to the preservation, research, and dissemination of Mexican traditional arts.
A passionate cultural advocate, Samuel Cortez is recognized not only for his artistic excellence but also for his leadership in cultivating future generations of dancers and strengthening the presence of Mexican heritage within the international arts community.

🌟 MEET THE 2025 MAESTROS🌟

Born in Guanajuato, Mexico, Roberto Martínez Rocha began dancing at the age of eight in 1982 and joined the Ballet Folklórico of the University of Guanajuato (BAFUG) in 1989. In August 1997, he became the company’s Director. Under his leadership, he founded the Children’s Group, a training ensemble that feeds new dancers into the main company, and officially established the acronym BAFUG.

As a dancer and choreographer, Martínez Rocha has created numerous themed programs that preserve and promote Mexican and Guanajuato folk traditions. His direction has brought BAFUG to national and international stages, including tours in France, Switzerland, Guam, China, and the United States. He has also led major collaborations with university folkloric groups across Mexico and the U.S.

BAFUG has performed at prestigious events such as the Festival Internacional Cervantino (2000–present), Vallarta Azteca International Folklore Festival (2022), the welcoming of Pope Benedict XVI (2012), and the Hannover Messe Industrial Fair (2019). He also developed the company’s Holy Week and Annual Seasons (2005–2020) and participated in the PBS film Fiesta Mexicana by Habanero Films.

Martínez Rocha won the State Grant for Artistic Creation (2007) for his project Día de las Flores, honoring one of Guanajuato’s most important traditions. He has taught countless workshops and repertoire courses throughout Mexico and the United States, sharing Guanajuato’s dance heritage with educational and community institutions, including UCLA, South Texas College, and numerous universities and cultural schools.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Artistic Education with a specialization in folkloric dance, and a technical degree in Tourism Administration from the University of Guanajuato. He has trained under renowned Mexican dance figures such as Rafael Zamarripa and Everardo Hernández, and studied modern and contemporary dance with leading experts.

Martínez Rocha has participated in national and international dance congresses and has served as an educator, researcher, and cultural advocate. He was a member of CIOFF (UNESCO’s International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals), representing Guanajuato from 2011 to 2016, and has held various cultural leadership roles in the State Institute of Culture.

🌟 MEET THE 2025 MAESTROS🌟

Originally from Veracruz, Mexico, she is a traditional dancer, choreographer, performing artist, and arts educator whose work bridges Afro-Veracruz traditions and contemporary performance. Born into an Afro-descendant family of Son Jarocho dancers and musicians from Tlacotalpan, she carries this heritage into her artistic vision and community-centered practice.

She trained at the Nandehui Dance Educational Institute in Xalapa and holds degrees in Choreography and Dance Performance from the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona, and in Artistic Education from the Nandehui Xalapa Higher Institute of Performing Arts. Her academic work also includes a certification in Afro-Latin American Studies from Harvard University’s Hutchins Center, where she earned honorable mention for her study Ethnic-Racial Education in Veracruz, along with further specialization in Afro-Mexican history and anti-racism studies.

A two-time recipient of the Mexican Ministry of Culture’s Performing Arts Creators Program, she developed the projects Fandango Negro and Diáspora, both dedicated to exploring Afro-descendant artistic expressions in Mexico. She previously received the PECDAV Young Creators scholarship for her project SON recuerdos, honoring iconic Son Jarocho figures.

Her artistic practice is characterized by a dialogue between folklore, Afro-Veracruz heritage, and contemporary performance. She serves as Artistic Director of the Experimental Performing Arts Festival Ma Biyaa, Director and founder of La Polaquera Escénica, and Assistant Director and dancer with Jóvenes Zapateadores.

Her choreographic and educational collaborations span institutions such as the Ballet Folclórico of the University of Guanajuato, South Texas College Ballet, and MACBA in Barcelona. She has performed and presented work at major venues and festivals worldwide, including the Palacio de Bellas Artes, Teatro de la Ciudad Esperanza Iris, the Zacatecas International Folklore Festival, the Thailand Dance Festival, and the Tanzsommer Innsbruck Festival in Austria.
