The military salute, while its origin is unknown, has shown up throughout history as a sign of respect, courtesy and honor.
Medieval knights in armor raised the visors of their helmets before greeting their lord or comrades. This gesture would have made a person both recognizable as well as vulnerable, at the same time demonstrating that the right hand (i.e., the sword hand) did not carry a weapon, both being signs of trust and good intention.
The Bible references the salute 49 times with its meaning translating to, (n.) The act of saluting, or expressing kind wishes or respect; salutation; a greeting. (v.) to honor.
Itโs with this in mind, we knew the Heroes Honor Festival salute had to happen. It was the long overdue respect, honor and acceptance our Vietnam Veterans didnโt hear coming home 50 years ago. It was the respect they werenโt shown. And It was the honor they hadnโt received.
God gave us a vision to heal generational trauma caused by the dishonoring of our Vietnam Warriors decades ago. We chose to honor our Vietnam Veterans and here are just a few of the reasons why:
1. They served and endured the most days in one year of combat in American history. WWII was 40 days, Vietnam was 240. That is worthy of a salute.
2. When they came home they were shamed by this nation. Spit on, called baby killers, abandoned by politicians, ostracized by family and friends, unsupported by the VA. Shamed into obscurity as many of them didnโt tell anyone for 30, 40 even 50 years after they had served. That is worthy of a salute.
3. They were denied benefits by the VA for Agent Orange so they took the fight to Washington and paved the way for future generations, like Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, to get the coverage they need for issues like those, caused by the burn pits overseas. That is worthy of a salute.
4. When Iraq soldiers' families were being shamed by protestors at the funerals of the fallen, it was the Vietnam Veterans that rose up and said โNEVER AGAIN. Never again will we allow our military to be shamed the way we were.โ They became the guardians of honor in our nation. That is worthy of a salute.
Vietnam Veterans: Thank you for your courage, determination and resilience in the face of unimaginable opposition. Today we salute you again, we honor you as the great warrior that you are. Your life and legacy is impacting generations of veterans.
