While we are bundled up inside and waiting for spring to arrive, we thought it would be a great time to update the Cruel Jewel website. Give the course description a little refresh. But it’s been a while since we’ve seen the course from the runner’s perspective.

So who better to put this course to words than you, our beloved runners. It doesn’t matter if you’ve finished or not, we want to hear from you.

This year at Cruel Jewel, we had a runner come into the Fire Pit aid station with his trekking pole (literally) through his hand. That was a first for us! He's up for the Best Race Day Fail award in the 2025 Keep Trail Running Weird awards, and we think he is most deserving.

We consider the Keep Trail Running Weird awards a “podium finish” for the everyday runner, honoring the community, quirkiness, and authenticity of our sport. It’s the fifth year of these awards, and we consider it a privilege to celebrate with everyone once again. The Keep Trail Running Weird ...

A few weeks ago, I got to head north to the beautiful mountains of West Virginia to run the Rim to River 100 with my best friend. Angie & I are both from PA & call Georgia home now, so this race held a special place for us both being so close to home. Mid-race, there was a landslide that cut road access off to part of the course that connected the trails to get us to the finish line. We were given the update at the turnaround & to be completely honest, the course change was flawless. As a race director, I cannot imagine the logistics that went into what they had to do to make it happen, especially before the front runner got to the point of the landslide. It was incredible to watch the changes unfold as we came through the Fayette aid station & watched the ‘new’ finish line being set up. They managed to move an entire aid station, shuttle drop bags, & make plans to shuttle runners from the new finish line back to ACE, where we started and it was pretty cool to finish under the New River Gorge Bridge at the Fayette aid station.
I cannot say enough wonderful things about this race & the race directors. Not just because of how they handled this mid-race course change & how effortlessly they made it appear to the runners, but for what they do after this race. Their series of races are done during the off-season when there is far less traffic in the area. These races & the runners, crew, & supporters bring an influx of money into this little mountain community, and beyond that, they have a non-profit called Adventure Appalachia. Taking straight from their website, ‘Adventure Appalachia facilitates empowering, educational outdoor adventure experiences for adolescents & adults. These activities encourage a sense of self-worth & empowerment, foster respect, understanding, & care of the natural world, & exemplify the importance of communication, teamwork, & leadership.’
If you are looking for a beautiful race in late October, & you want to support a race that is doing incredible things for their community, put this one on your list. I promise you will not be disappointed.

We have so much fun at Merrill’s mile, we want you to join us.

We have volunteer openings pretty much all weekend (starting Friday 8am until the party ends on Sunday), especially those weird overnight hours.

If you think you can suffer through 12 hours with either of us, drop a comment here, DM us, or use the fancy form on our fancy website! As always, volunteering not only gets you free entry to a future race, if you like, you also get my eternal gratitude, and quite possibly a hug - with consent.
