The IR are your 2024 Glen Oaks Wiffle Early Summer Tourney CHAMPIONS, defeating the defending champs Ostriches, 1-0 in the championship game.
It’s a brand new year of wiffs in Glen Oaks, and anything is possible. Something that isn’t brand new… the Ostriches dominating the tournament for the second straight time. Jason Good assembles his winning squad while bringing back Luis Selles after his time off in November. The Ostriches took the 1 seed, going 3-0, and meeting the 8 seed Jerz Bomb Squad, and defeating them 4-3, on a walk-off base hit, and then the 5 seed VI Bombsquad, on a walk-off home run by UTIL Cade Schofield, to punch their ticket to chip. The IR met the Cream Pies in the first round, but after a great game got the best of them in 5 innings, 1-0 on a Nick Clendining walk-off home run. They met the 3 seed Ball Busters in the semi-finals. After going down 5-0, the IR stormed back with 3 in the first, two in the third, and one in the fifth, and took the game 6-5 on a walk-off home run thanks to Jake Wilkerson. This sent them to their first championship as a team.
Buri on the mound for the Ostriches, and Morris on the bump for The IR. It was a usual championship pitchers duel, as the difference was a Keegan McGravey single to right, that turned into a triple on an error by Colin Buri. Jake Wilkerson scored from first. Morris set down the Ostrich power lineup in order, besides an excellent bobbled line drive caught by McGravey out in left. The IR celebrate their first title as a team: Fayette and Clendining’s first since August 2023, Wilkerson’s first since June 2023, McGravey’s first ever, and Morris’ (the captain) first since August 2022.
Another successful tournament for Glen Oaks Wiffle, and a great one to kick off 2024. Thank you to everyone who participated and hoping everyone will be back for the Mid-Summer Classic in early July!
