We had the pleasure of experiencing Northwood Black today, what a course! To the surprise of no one, that course is harder than the pros make it look. One thing that definitely stood out was the condition of the property. With multiple courses available to play, it is for sure a destination. The gaps are bigger than they seem on coverage, but the rough is just as unforgiving.
This got us thinking…what is the best course style to play? Would you plan a trip around a course that is setup with ~300’ holes that take a good shot for the birdie? Or do you need 15 par 4s to move the needle? In both cases, every teeshot matters.
We haven’t played every course in our state, but we’ve played most of them. Love it or hate it, let us know! Here is our list of top ten courses in Iowa, in no particular order of course.
Atlantic DGC (Atlantic)
Stable Run (lAmes)
Walnut Ridge (Johnston, DM Metro)
Wildcat Bluff (Urbana)
Peninsula Park (Iowa City)
Shaver Park (Cedar Rapids)
One Vision (Clear Lake)

Honorable Mentions:

Iowa Lakes Community College (Emmetsburg, Good use of the property)

Unfortanutely, there are a few courses that we have not played. There are also likely a few courses that we forgot. Which courses do we need to play, and which courses do you think need a little more shine?
