On Juneteenth, we commemorate the long-delayed arrival of freedom in Galveston, Texas in 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

As we reflect on this day, we celebrate the strength, perseverance, and contributions of Black Americans—on and off the ice. From Willie O’Ree breaking the NHL color barrier to the trailblazers shaping the game today, hockey has been enriched by those who pushed boundaries and defied expectations.

Let’s honor the past, uplift each other, and keep working toward inclusion and equity in every locker room, rink, and arena.
