Charlottesville, Virginia

January 5, 2018

Dear Friends,

We wanted to let you know that the LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph will cease operations this month. While our event was beloved by many in Charlottesville and in the international photography community, we unfortunately, do not have the financial resources to continue.

We are eternally grateful to our featured artists for sharing their talents and inspiring us to look at the world in new ways. And we certainly could not have existed for the past 10 years without the support of our sponsors, donors, attendees, and volunteers. We wish you all much success in your future endeavors and hope our paths cross again soon.

Sincerely,

The LOOK3 Festival Governing Board

Please join LOOK3 at The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative for a reception and Artist Talk by Charlottesville-based photographer, Matt Eich on Saturday, June 17th at 7pm. His exhibition, Carry Me Ohio, is on view at the Bridge through June 30th. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear Matt talk about spending 10 years immersed in the lives of the “forgotten class” of rural Appalachian Ohio — the white, proud, blue-collar workers, left behind after the mining corporations stripped the region of its resources. Matt Eich Photography’s work from this project was published last year in his first monograph, Carry Me Ohio (Sturm & Drang) and is currently featured in a show at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland.

LOOK3 is pleased to support Matt Eich Photography’s exhibition, Carry Me Ohio, opening at the The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative TONIGHT, June 2nd (First Friday reception 5:30 - 7:30 pm.) Matt first came to our attention when he was selected as a LOOKbetween participating artist in 2010. Since then, Matt has gained international recognition as a photographic essayist focusing on long-form projects about the American condition.

Matt's first monograph, Carry Me Ohio (Sturm & Drang) was published in 2016. This work is the result of ten years he spent in rural, Appalachian Ohio, immersed in the lives of the “forgotten class”—the white, proud, blue-collar workers, left behind after the mining corporations stripped the region of its resources.

"What I discovered transcends any stereotype – despite circumstances, these proud Americans persevere and cling to family, community, and land with an admirable tenacity. This place is a microcosm of a story that plays out around our country and around the world. History repeats itself. Our collective memory favors the convenience of amnesia over acknowledging the damage that we continue to inflict upon ourselves. Photography is the antidote. This collection of images is my love song to Ohio”. –Matt Eich

Matt will give an artist talk at The Bridge on Saturday, June 17 at 7:00 pm. I do hope you can join us!

Dear LOOK3 Community:

When we began conceiving the Festival of the Photograph in 2006, we believed that our community needed a deep breath, a moment where we might all join together in a non-competitive, non-commercial environment to show work, talk, listen, look. Above all, we wanted to celebrate those who had accomplished so much in our field and inspire the next generation of artists. Photography was changing so quickly, and there was much to consider, much to learn, much to see. Why not, we thought, do it together each summer?

Now, ten years -- eight LOOK3s and two LOOKbetweens -- since the first Festival in 2007, it’s time once again for us to reflect. Is LOOK3 in its current iteration as relevant as it can be? If not, what should change? How does the event evolve? How can LOOK3 both serve and expand our community? And, more pragmatically, how do we produce a Festival that is sustainable?

And so, we’ve decided not to hold the LOOK3 Festival in 2017, and instead take time to reconceive and redesign -- to, in effect, look again. We invite you to be part of this process. Please share your thoughts and ideas with us by clicking on the link below or by visiting our homepage: www.look3.org

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to you -- our featured artists, partners, donors, attendees, and volunteers. As we look forward, we know that whatever the future may hold, we will always strive to honor the incredible talent and spirit of community that has brought us together.

With much thanks and appreciation,

The LOOK3 Team
