Saturday night’s 5th Annual Where I’m From Festival was a beautiful evening of music and community.

Thank you to everyone who made it out — of course that includes all of our music-loving locals, but also folks from Atlanta, New York, Charleston, Charlotte, and even Germany who made the trip.

Thanks to my Midnight Choir, Lauren, Levi, Seth, and Taylor for sharing their time and talents… and to the folks behind the scenes who you probably don’t know, but absolutely should: Alex, Wayne, Nick, Matt, Easton, Hailey, and everyone else who helped make the night happen. Shout out to the sponsors too.

And how about the three Young Storytellers of Kershaw County who shared their poems and short stories about growing up in this place we call home? They were incredible, and as South Carolina Poet Laureate, I can’t wait to showcase more storytellers across our great state soon.

It takes a village. Where I’m From taught me that many moons ago… and this weekend reminded me of that all over again.

Our 5th Annual Where I’m From is happening this evening in Camden (indoors at the City Arena)!!

Doors: 5:30PM
Music: 6:00PM

VIP ticket holders will have seats.
GA ticket holders should bring their own chairs/seats.
No outside food or drink.
Food and drink will be available for purchase.

It’s official!!

The South Carolina State Legislature has designated my version of “Carolina When I Die” — featuring my SC musical brothers Darius Rucker and Edwin McCain — an official State Song of South Carolina.

Technically, it is our state’s third “state song,” as there are two older songs that were also made official in their time — one from 1911 and one from 1984. And those two songs are great & all… but if I’m being honest, I sure do hope “Carolina When I Die” is the one we South Carolinians sing for the rest of my days, your days, and hopefully long after we’re all gone.

Tomorrow, the official “Carolina When I Die” State Song Version will be available on all streaming platforms. It’s essentially the same as the original — just with a couple of very small lyric changes in the first verse to make sure SC kids from 5 to 95 can all feel good about learning & singing every word. :)

I have to thank our Kershaw County & South Carolina legislators for being such champions of this song (especially Sen. Jeffrey Graham & Rep. Cody T. Mitchell), Governor McMaster for loving music and storytelling, & all the behind-the-scenes folks who helped make this happen.

It was a complete surprise to even have this song considered. I knew absolutely nothing about the journey of a bill being put before the state until I got the call about this… & let me tell you folks, it is a lot & a heck of a process!!

I also have to send love to my co-writers on “Carolina When I Die” — Levi Lowrey, Wyatt Durrette, and Kevin McDonald. There was some magic in that room the day we wrote this one.

And a little more love to Darius and Edwin for agreeing to sing on this version. Both of those guys are asked to do a million things every week, so the fact that they took the time to add their voices to this is special to me in more ways than I could ever explain.

My hope in having Darius sing a verse, and Edwin add those incredible harmonies, was not just to make the track sound better, but to help this song reach even more folks in our beloved South Carolina.

And well… it looks like that just might be happening.

“WHERE I’M FROM” HAS MOVED INDOORS!!

Same music. Same night. Now with AC!!

The weather for Saturday is looking a little hot and a whole lot stormy, so just to be safe, we are moving the 5th Annual Where I’m From Festival from outside on the Town Green to inside at Camden’s City Arena.

NEW LOCATION:
Camden City Arena
420 Broad Street
Camden, SC 29020
Next to Zemp Stadium

This way we are safe from the wind, rain, lightning, heat, and humidity in Saturday’s forecast.

And… this also means the weather is officially no excuse for not joining us Saturday night, because we will be inside with AC and damn fine music. :)

This year’s event will feature Patrick Davis & His Midnight Choir, along with music from my better 99%, Lauren Jenkins, our incredibly talented friends Levi Lowrey and Seth Walker, and local boy Taylor Ingle.

VIP and GA passes are available now, so I hope you’ll make plans to join us. (VIP ticket holders will have seats, GA will need to bring their own seating/law chairs).

Tickets on my site or you can get in person from my dad’s shop downtown.

Sharing yet another reason to join us on May 23rd at Where I’m From.

As Poet Laureate, I had the chance to work with Kershaw County high school English teachers and librarians on something we called “Young Storytellers of Kershaw County”.

We asked young poets, songwriters, and writers from our local high schools to submit an original piece about what it has meant to them to grow up in Kershaw County.

And I gotta say… the submissions were truly wonderful. Some really impressive writing from these young folks.

After reading through them, the teachers, librarians, and I worked together to choose a few students who will now get the chance to share their words from the stage at Where I’m From.

I can’t wait for everyone to hear these young voices.

Very excited for the 5th Annual Songwriters in Paradise Healdsburg, happening July 16–18, 2026 in beautiful Sonoma County wine country.

Healdsburg has become a very special place for me, Lauren & SIP over the past five years, and every time we get the chance to experience the people, the wine, the food and the beautiful backdrop of Sonoma County it is nothing short of magic.
