🧼 Scrub Files Episode 17 | Heart Health Month

What Are the Biggest Risk Factors for Heart Disease?

Heart disease doesn’t happen overnight — it develops over time. Some risk factors we can’t change, like age and family history. But many are within our control.

The most common risk factors include:
• High blood pressure
• High cholesterol
• Smoking
• Diabetes
• Physical inactivity
• Chronic stress
• Poor sleep

The good news? Small changes add up. Managing blood pressure, moving regularly, getting adequate sleep, and reducing stress can significantly lower risk over time. Heart health isn’t about being perfect — it’s about being consistent.

What Is Heart Health?

Heart health refers to how well your heart and blood vessels support your body day to day. It’s influenced by things like movement, sleep, stress levels, nutrition, hydration, and how well conditions like blood pressure or cholesterol are managed. Heart health isn’t about perfection or a single number — it’s about patterns over time. Small, consistent choices and understanding how your body feels can make a meaningful difference long before problems start.

Scrub Files Vol 15: When Is Pain a Red Flag?

Pain is common, but not all pain is dangerous. Most everyday aches are related to muscle tension, overuse, stress, or minor irritation and will improve with time, movement, or rest. Pain becomes more concerning when it’s sudden, severe, worsening instead of improving, or paired with other symptoms like fever, numbness, weakness, chest pain, shortness of breath, unexplained weight loss, or changes in bowel or bladder control. Trust your instincts too — if pain feels very different than anything you’ve experienced before, that’s worth paying attention to. Pain is information, not always an emergency, but sometimes it’s your body asking for help.

When Should You Stay Home If You’re Sick?

With the flu hitting hard this year, it’s very important to make an extra effort to keep yourself and others safe! Even if you don’t have the flu, other sickness such as a cold can weaken your body’s immune system and increase your chances of getting the flu and passing it on to others.

If you’re asking yourself whether you should push through the day — here’s a simple rule of thumb:

🤒 Stay home if you have:
• A fever
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Body aches or chills
• A bad cough or sore throat
• You feel “wiped out”

You’re not being weak — you’re being responsible. Rest helps your body heal and protects the people around you.

💡 Bottom line:
If your body is asking for rest, listen. Staying home is sometimes the healthiest choice.

Why Shoveling Snow Is So Hard on Your Heart

Shoveling snow might not feel like exercise — but for your heart, it can be one of the most demanding things you do all year.

Here’s why it’s risky:

❄️ Cold temperatures cause blood vessels to tighten, which raises blood pressure
🧱 Heavy, wet snow dramatically increases physical strain
😤 Holding your breath while lifting spikes heart workload
🚪 Sudden exertion (especially first thing in the morning) stresses the cardiovascular system

All of that together can increase the risk of heart attack, especially for people with high blood pressure, heart disease, or low exercise tolerance.

🧠 How to shovel safer:
• Warm up before starting
• Push snow when possible instead of lifting
• Take frequent breaks
• Breathe steadily — no breath holding
• Stop immediately if you feel chest pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath

🚨 If you have risk factors or symptoms, it’s okay to ask for help or use a snow blower. No driveway is worth your heart.

“Do I Have Bad Posture?”

Here’s a secret from a physical therapist:
👉 Posture isn’t about looking perfectly upright — it’s about how long you stay in one position.

Most people think “bad posture” is the cause of their pain, but the real issue is sometimes just a lack of movement. You can slouch, sit tall, lean to the side, tuck a foot under you — none of these are “wrong.” Your body just hates being stuck in any position for too long.

Here’s what actually matters:
• If you’ve been in the same position for 45–60 minutes, change it.
• Your muscles crave variety — sitting, standing, stretching, walking… switch it up.
• Pain usually comes from overloading one spot, not from a single “bad posture.”

So instead of chasing the “perfect posture,” aim for postural balance:
✨ A mix of movement, breaks, and positions throughout your day.

Your best posture?
👉 Your next one.
