Sam's Sunday Set & Shed

Sam's Sunday Set & Shed A musical mentoring series and open jam session to foster the growth of live musical performance.

A musical mentoring series featuring a performance by a teacher and their protege, followed by a “jazz woodshed” jam session ("Woodshed" is jazz slang for working on one's improvisational skills.) offering all aspiring musicians and vocalists an opportunity to hone their skills with professional musicians.

4:00-7:00pm on the second Sunday of every month. Admission is by a suggested donation of $

10 for adults and $5 for students ages 18 & under, with all proceeds going to the scheduled musicians. Guests are also encouraged to bring a potluck dish to share.

“Sam’s Sunday Set and Shed” was conceived by Silktone Productions’ founder Samirah Evans based on her own experience as an up-and-coming vocalist in New Orleans, where it was customary for seasoned artists to invite young musicians and singers onstage. She hopes that the casual, family-friendly atmosphere of the Elliot Street Café on a Sunday afternoon, and its downtown location, will encourage young musicians to come and practice their craft. Silktone Productions would like to thank the Vermont Jazz Center, the Open Music Collective and Lotus Graphics for their support of this program.

This program touched my heart and moved me in so many ways. It truly has been one of my greatest endeavors. Due to having to focus on the rebuilding of our house that suffered a fire earlier this year I unfortunately will not have the time or quite possibly the energy to continue the program this year. My deepest gratitude to all who participated in making good music, contributing to providing an opportunity for aspiring young and older artist and just sharing in having a good time.

It is my hope to resume in June 2014 hopefully with the support of sponsors. If anyone has any ideas on that front please do share.

“He’s a little rascal; tenacious and very courageous. He’ll sit in on any song and have no idea what the changes are and still play his butt off,” Mullett says of Beardsley. “He is definitely a cat that is going to keep the legacy of jazz alive.”

You don't want to miss the commanding vocals of Moonlight and his son Girard singing with him for the first time in 11 years. It kicks off at 4p at the Elliot St. Cafe. This family affair will be the final Sam's Set and Shed of this series then we'll take a break and reconvene in April. I appreciate all of the support this series has received from the community.
