Yesterday was TEAM-Boulder Running’s final day as Race Director of the Sunset Trail Running Festival.

Back in 2019, as this photo shows, alongside Maya MacHamer from Fourmile Watershed and trail running legend Joe Grant, I was asked to help rebuild an event following a challenging and tumultuous year. The transition wasn’t easy. As an outsider, the hardest part was earning the trust of the residents and helping them understand why we wanted to do the event in Gold Hill. Gold Hill is a place that values its peace, quiet, and strong sense of community, and many residents understandably preferred to be left alone. Building relationships, listening to concerns, and demonstrating respect for the town’s character became the foundation of everything we did that year and moving forward.

Fast forward to 2026, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built together. Joe moved to Durango, Maya transitioned out, and Cat Price stepped in with the Boulder Watershed Collective. Through it all, the festival has continued to grow. Today, the town is engaged, supportive, and an integral part of the event. We’ve worked hard to create a festival that respects the character, history, and values of Gold Hill while giving runners the opportunity to experience the beauty and spirit of this special mountain community.

As I step away, I’m grateful for the trust that was placed in me and for the countless people who helped make the festival what it is today. Volunteers, sponsors, runners, residents, local organizations, and community leaders all played a role in shaping its success.

Most importantly, I believe I delivered on the promises I made when I first accepted the role: to listen, to build relationships, and to leave the event stronger than I found it.

The festival is in a great place, and I have no doubt it has a bright future ahead.

Thank you, Gold Hill. It has been an honor.

🚨 ONLY 3 DAYS LEFT TO REGISTER 🚨

🏅Our Sunset Trail Running Festival medal has arrived!

Inspired by the breathtaking landscapes of Gold Hill, Colorado, the medal captures the magic of trail running in the Rocky Mountains. The centrepiece features a runner silhouetted against a stunning mountain sunset, with golden light spilling across rugged peaks, pine forests and historic mining structures that pay homage to Gold Hill’s rich heritage.

The vibrant ribbon is equally impressive, showcasing dramatic canyon walls and alpine scenery in deep purples and fiery oranges that perfectly reflect the colours of a Colorado sunset. Every detail has been thoughtfully designed to evoke adventure, exploration and the sense of accomplishment that comes from conquering mountain trails.

This isn’t just a finisher medal, it’s a keepsake. A piece of art that tells the story of an unforgettable day on the trails and serves as a lasting reminder of the challenge, beauty and spirit of the Sunset Trail Running Festival.

On Sunday June 21st, runners won’t just earn a medal. They’ll earn a symbol of their journey through one of Colorado’s most stunning mountain landscapes. 🌄🏃‍♀️⛰️

Bold. Beautiful. Uniquely Colorado. A medal worthy of every mile.

The End of the Calarat Challenge Trail Running Festival.

It is with disappointment that we announce the conclusion of the Calarat Challenge Trail Running Festival.

While I am naturally disappointed to see our Cal-Wood chapter come to a close, I completely understand that every event must ultimately be sustainable from a financial perspective. Unfortunately, despite its success in bringing people together and showcasing this incredible place, the event has not generated the financial return Cal-wood required for it to continue.

I want to sincerely thank Cal-Wood for entrusting us with the opportunity to showcase such a special property and its surrounding trails to hundreds of runners, walkers, volunteers, and families over the years.

Since 2015, we have poured our hearts into this event. We have always remained committed to Cal-Wood’s vision: helping people discover where Cal-Wood is, what Cal-Wood stands for, and why it is such an important place. It connected people with nature, encouraged adventure, built community, and introduced countless individuals and families to a place they may otherwise never have experienced.

This event was truly a passion project. Our reward came from seeing smiling faces at the finish line, families camping under the stars, children exploring the outdoors, and participants returning year after year to enjoy the trails and the Cal-Wood experience.

The true measure of the festival was the memories created, the friendships formed, the stories shared, and the awareness raised for an organization doing important work.

Thank you, Cal-Wood, for allowing us to become part of your story and your legacy. It has been an honor and a privilege to play a small role in helping people discover and appreciate this remarkable place.

While the festival may be ending, the impact it made will endure for years to come.

With gratitude,

Lee & Brian
