It is with a heavy heart that we must cancel the Boston Butoh Festival for April 2020. We are currently working on rescheduling the festival (stay tuned). Thank you to all of our artists, their dedication, their magnanimity, and the beauty of their art and teaching of butoh. All of this is sorely needed now as we confront this crisis together.❤️❤️❤️

Headlining our festival: Yumiko Yoshioka is a Japanese Butoh dancer and choreographer from Tokyo. Since 1988 she has been based in Germany. Yumiko is a former member of Ariadone, the first female Butoh company, which was founded by Ko Murobushi and Carlotta Ikeda in 1974. In 1978, she performed with Ko and Carolotta in Paris, LE DERNIER EDEN – PORTE DE L’AU-DELA, the very first Butoh performance to be presented in a public theatre outside Japan. In 1988 she met Minako Seki and delta RA’i in Berlin, with whom she founded tatoeba THÉÂTRE DANCE GROTESQUE. This experience, along with work with the Butoh dancer Kim-Itoh, encouraged Yumiko to start to unfold her own personal style of dancing and choreography.

Yumiko Yoshioka is a dancer, teacher and choreographer based in Berlin. Yumiko teaches her Butoh and Organic Movement training internationally.

About the Boston Butoh Festival

The Boston Butoh Festival will be presented at the Boston Center for the Arts’ Plaza Theater from Wednesday, April 22nd through Sunday April 26th, 2020. The program is co-produced by Mobius and the Boston Center for the Arts. We are excited to debut the program for our second annual festival which includes a symposium, 4 evenings of performance and 2 workshops. This builds on the success of our inaugural festival in 2019 in which we presented headlining artists Yuko Kaseki and Zack Fuller in collaboration with Emily Smith and Michael Evans at the Green Street Studios in Cambridge. We are proud to provide Boston audiences with the rare opportunity to dive deeply into this enigmatic avant-garde dance form. Please contact festival director, Ellen Godena for a press packet or with questions at [email protected]
