The word "local" isn't just a throwaway marketing term used to drum up feelings of nostalgia. It's a word that's still very much alive today. "Local" is the tie that binds our community, and it's at the heart of the Birmingham Originals.
The Birmingham Originals are a group of passionate individuals developing locally owned and operated restaurants, each with its own unique flavor and flair, in order to propel Birmingham's robust food scene. Whether upscale or down-home, these restaurants are driven by a desire to offer top-notch dining to homegrown patrons and visitors alike.
The Birmingham Originals believes an energized and independent restaurant community makes our city a better place to live—and not just because of the food. The dollars spent in local restaurants stay in Birmingham, providing economic growth, which, in turn, allows local restaurants to support, among other things, vital local charities and cultural programs.
As an additional effort to highlight and engage Birmingham’s culinary community, the Birmingham Originals organize Alabama’s premier food, wine and beer festival – Breakin’ Bread. As Birmingham Originals’ flagship event, Breakin’ Bread features over 30 of the Magic City’s best restaurants for an afternoon of unlimited signature dishes. Guests can refresh with wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages while enjoying musical entertainment, cooking demonstrations, local vendors and fun for the whole family – all while giving back to a valuable local cause.
We hope that you'll join our efforts to continue making Birmingham a great city and a source of pride for residents and visitors—one plate at a time.
Since 2002, Birmingham Originals has generously donated over $130,000 to local charitable organizations benefiting children and families in the greater Birmingham area. Past recipients have included Jones Valley Teaching Farm, UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, Camp Smile-A-Mile, Make-A-Wish Alabama, United Way Healthy Communities, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama and the Susan G. Komen North Central Alabama.
