Plate Lunch

First, sorry I missed last week. Got busy and distracted.

I'm writing this at lunch time, so I have lunch on the brain. I'm attaching a link to a YouTube video of a guy I like to watch. He goes to a lot of places that have plate lunches and meat markets.

If you're showing up early to GeoWoodstock, or maybe headed to Houma for the GeoTour, or just happen to be in Louisiana, you need to find one of these places that does plate lunches. And bring a cooler for the meat market.

I haven't watched all the video I'm posting, but I watched the beginning. I'm fairly certain I stopped at this place. I didn't get a plate lunch because I didn't know it was a thing. I saw the stuff I knew to get and was a very happy camper with that.

Know that if you're on a road trip with me, and especially if we're geocaching, and we're in this part of the world, we ARE stopping for lunch. And snack. And dinner. And ....

Calling all my Louisiana folks…. We’ve reached out to some but I’m making a post as well…. Brian Erickson is putting together a really cool project called Cito across the world and Louisiana is the only state not represented! We can’t have this happen…. Anyone willing to host one? Anywhere in the state?

Stuffed Mirliton

This is not something I've had, but I sure am looking forward to trying it!

Stuffed Mirliton is Creole. They take a chayote squash, aka a mirliton or vegetable per, boil it, scoop out some of the flesh to make room, and stuff it shrimp, ham, or sausage, and guess what else - onions, celery, and bell pepper. I swear that put that stuff in everything. Probably even donuts and breakfast cereal. Anyway, it's then coated with breadcrumbs and baked. Sounds great to me!

Maque Choux

This is a fusion of Creole and Native Indian cooking. It is basically corn, green bell pepper, and onion (where's the celery?). Some would add extras such as garlic, celery (there it is), okra, and/or tomato.

It is cooked in some type of fat, typically bacon grease, but people use what they have. Water or some type of stock was added as needed. It can be finished with red or black pepper, hot sauce (that would be a given for me), and/or sugar.

I haven't had this, and I'm looking forward to trying it between now and GeoWoodstock.

Red Beans and Rice

This is a dish that was typically made on Mondays for wash day, but you can get it any time now. It consists of red beans (kidney beans) and rice. You’re probably saying “Duh.” But it also contains as no big surprise the trinity (onions, bell peppers, celery). It might have some ham hock or andouille sausage. May have a few seasonings thrown in that will vary by who is making it. Regardless, there’s usually nothing weird in it.

It’s basically a comfort food that could be eaten any time of day. My equivalent of this is beans (pinto) and cornbread. But I’d gladly eat either one, and could be very happy if that’s all I had as long it was a big bowl.

Dirty Rice

Dirty rice is not rice dropped on the floor, or rice with dirt in it. It’s called dirty rice because of the color. It just looks dirty.

So what’s in dirty rice? Pork, beef, and/or chicken. Green bell pepper, celery, and onion (AKA ???... You should know by now). Cayenne and black pepper. Maybe some other spices. Parsley and chopped green onions are sometimes used for a garnish.

The pork and beef from a long time ago may be some questionable parts, but in a modern restaurant it’ll be what you usually eat. If you get it at someone’s house who knows. But try it anyway.

It’s basically a side for anything. And it’s good eats.
