America survived.

Barely, judging by the headlines.

Apparently a young man moving to music was enough to make grown adults worry about civilization. And yet here we are, 70 years later, still dancing, still listening to music, and still somehow keeping the lights on.

Tonight at the Grange, we’ll be a little calmer than Elvis.

Probably. 🙃

Something special is happening at the Fairfax Grange — and it’s free.

On Monday, June 1, Kern Magazine presents Art Meets Storytelling, an immersive evening of interview, art, dance, music, photography, and local history inside one of Bakersfield’s classic community halls.

I’ll be part of the storytelling portion, sharing some of the history of Fairfax Grange 570 and the ongoing work to preserve this 1940 dance hall for future generations.

The evening will also feature artists JJ Silva and Charlotte White, photographers Crissy and Alie, dancers Jesus and Symone, and live music by The Bakersfield Sound Guard.

Sketch artists are encouraged to participate, but you don’t have to be an artist to attend. Come listen, watch, sketch, and experience the Grange as it was meant to be used — as a place where people gather, create, and connect.

This is a free event.

Today is National Paperclip Day.

A tiny bent piece of wire that somehow holds things together.

By Friday, that feels about right.

After a long week, most of us are held together by coffee, stubbornness, and whatever small hope is left in the snack drawer.

So come let the Grange help.

We have music.
We have dancing.
We have friendly people.
We usually have cookies, which is more than most paperclips can offer.

On May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Mount Everest.

Most of us are aiming a little lower this Friday.

Maybe your mountain is remembering the next step.
Maybe it is asking someone to dance.
Maybe it is just getting out of the house after a long week.

That counts.

Every dancer starts somewhere. Every regular was new once. And every Friday night, the Grange gives people a place to practice, laugh, and keep climbing.

No oxygen tanks required.
