Texas Conference for Women Harnessing the collective wisdom, experience and energy of inspirational

On a team call this week, we asked everyone the same question: who has recently made you proud?

We gave people a moment to think. And what came back was exactly what you'd hope for.

A daughter who just walked into her first week of college — the kind of milestone that feels both sudden and a long time coming. A friend who held everything together as a solo parent for two weeks, the kind of holding-it-together that only the people closest to her probably even noticed. A sister who enrolled in school to pursue something she'd been putting off, because she decided the right time was now. And a friend who is actively training to travel from the North Pole to the South Pole — not planning it someday, doing it now.

What we love about this question is that the answers are always personal. You can admire someone famous from a distance. But pride is different. Pride means you've watched someone up close — you know what it cost them, what they were afraid of, what they pushed through anyway. That's not something you can feel about a stranger.

Who has recently made you proud? Tell us about her in the comments. 👇

Last week we shared a video of Gloria from our stage. Today we want to share something more personal.

Gloria Steinem co-founded Ms. Magazine when women had almost no platform of their own. She went undercover as a Pl***oy bunny to expose the working conditions women endured and turned it into one of the most talked-about pieces of journalism of the decade. She helped establish the Women's Action Alliance, the National Women's Political Caucus, and the Ms. Foundation for Women. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She spent 92 years believing that the world could be more equal — and doing something about it every single day.

Over two decades, she also stood on the Conferences for Women stages. She sat in our rooms. She looked out at the women in front of her and reminded them every single time that their voice, their story, and their particular way of seeing the world was something nobody else could offer.

We have been sitting with her words all week. "We could not be wholly human without each other." That was how she lived. That was what she built. That is what she leaves behind.

Our Executive Director Jessica Black shared a personal memory of Gloria from the CFW Speaker’s Lounge in 2010 — warm, kind, authentic, needing and wanting absolutely nothing except to sit at a table and talk about everything and absolutely nothing. It is the kind of story that captures exactly who she was.

Jessica also wrote about what Gloria’s presence meant to our team, our community, and the thousands of women who got to be in her presence over the years. We think it’s worth sitting with today.

We are heartbroken by the passing of Gloria Steinem at 92.

What we can say is this: she was a journalist who changed what journalism could do. An activist who helped build the infrastructure of the modern women's movement from the ground up. A writer whose voice gave language to experiences millions of women had never seen named before. A co-founder of Ms. Magazine at a time when women had no mainstream platform of their own. A recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. And someone who, year after year, chose to stand on the Conferences for Women stage and speak directly to the women who needed her most.

In this video from our National Conference for Women in 2025, she told us to welcome difference as a source of fun and learning — and that even if you don't know what the reward will be, it is worth the adventure.

When joining us last year, she was still curious. Still hopeful. Still showing up.

We will miss her presence in our rooms more than we can say.

“Sometimes it is not that you are not ready for the opportunity of a lifetime, sometimes it's that the opportunity of a lifetime is not yet ready for you.“

Tunde Oyeneyin said this, and we haven't been able to shake it.

She was recruited to become a Peloton instructor. She didn't get it the first time. She waited; leadership changed, and then the door reopened. Now she is one of the most recognizable instructors in the world.

The version of her story where she got it the first time? We're not sure it would have been the same story.

That's the thing about timing. It's not always about readiness. Sometimes the path needs to catch up to you.

We cannot wait to have Tunde — and Hoda Kotb — on the Texas CFW stage this October. 👇

The women who move things forward aren't less scared or more ready, they just stopped waiting for a feeling that was never coming and started anyway.
