This weekend we celebrate the Winter Solstice. Solstice derives from Latin solstitium – sol, sun, and stitium, and the Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year. Many of the modern Christmas celebrations derive from Pagan traditions. Winter Solstice was the most important holiday of Northern Europe. The Norse celebrated a twelve-day festival heralding the return of the light, symbolized by burning the Yule log (Old German Jülen – wheel) as they looked forward to the breaking of the winter and the beginning of the new year. The German custom of bringing in the evergreen and holly was a promise that spring would return.

For those wishing to join a community celebration, there will be an open Yule circle on Sunday, December 21, at Back to Nature Garden Center. We'll be outside by the fire, so dress for the weather. All welcome.

Back to Nature is a garden center, venue, and bistro in historic Augusta near Summerville.

We at Pagan Fest offer heartfelt thanks to Ashleah Hudson for founding and helping to organize this event. Moving forward, the remaining organizers have decided to rebrand this event as Mystic Faire, and are excited to announce the date of September 26, 2026. Our event will still be centered on the Pagan community but we feel that in this particular time and place, a less challenging name willl make this event more accessible to seekers and participants. We will be posting vendor information and further details soon. For now, please mark the date for next year! We will be in the same location, the beautiful Back to Nature Garden Center.
