Tichenor Tuesday✨
We recently came across this small oval, gold-tone monogram plaque belonging to Emily Burney Tichenor. Featuring an ornate raised “EJB” monogram surrounded by a delicate beaded border.
The reverse reveals that this was a “Monogram Crests Hallmark”—a commercially produced personalized emblem designed to be applied to everyday belongings such as handbags, luggage, cameras, automobiles, and even skis. The packaging describes the crest as permanent and weatherproof, suitable for use on leather, plastic, vinyl, wood, metal, and glass.
While the design looks almost like a traditional heraldic crest, this was actually a mid-20th-century personalized accessory. And that is what makes it so interesting to us.
This little object gives us a glimpse of Emily beyond the history books. She wasn't simply the woman who lived in this historic house or the person connected to its preservation. She was a woman with personal belongings, her own sense of style, and an appreciation for the tradition of monogramming and beautifully personalized objects.
A small object. A personal touch. A new piece of Emily's story.✨

Tichenor Tuesday✨
Located upstairs in the McDaniel-Tichenor House in “Emily’s Room,” this handsome slant-front secretary desk reflects both the beauty and practicality of traditional American furniture. Its hinged writing surface opens to reveal a series of small pigeonholes and compartments designed for organizing letters, documents, writing supplies, and other important papers, while spacious drawers below provide additional storage. Slant-front desks were traditionally valued as compact writing and storage spaces, with interiors designed to hold correspondence and household papers.
This piece holds special meaning in Emily’s Room, reflecting Mrs. Emily Tichenor’s love for correspondence. At a time when handwritten letters were an essential means of maintaining friendships, family connections, and community relationships, a desk such as this would have provided a private and purposeful space for the thoughtful art of letter writing.
With its warm wood finish, brass hardware, and graceful proportions, the secretary desk serves as a reminder that the objects within the McDaniel-Tichenor House help tell the personal stories of the people who called it home.✨
