What have I been up to?

In January 2024 I proposed to create an editorial group for the Buncombe County Democratic Party. The Party Chair approved the enterprise, and we have since assembled a group of more than 30 volunteer writers who are crafting and have had published many Op/Eds and Letters to the Editor. With concern for our democratic way of life, our target is more visibility for our cause and incentives to vote.

Our slogan: "Rant with Purpose. Support with Facts. Propel to Action!"

BLACK MOUNTAIN CANDIDATES FOR ALDERMEN
FORUM PRESENTED BY INDIVISIBLE BLACK MOUNTAIN

BLACK MOUNTAIN, NC —Seven candidates vying for positions on the Black Mountain Board of Aldermen will discuss their qualifications and vision for the town’s future during a webinar forum hosted by nonpartisan Indivisible Black Mountain.

The zoom webinar will be held on Monday, September 21 at 7:00 p.m. Viewers are requested to register in advance by clicking on the following link: https.//us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_jdP3LijmTSOC4TZszvrXfg

Candidates include Doug Hay, Tonia Holderman, Pam King, Archie Pertiller, Jr., Matthew Turner, Justyn Whitson, and Jennifer Willet. Sarah Vekasi will moderate the question-and-answer meeting.

Some of issues to be discussed are: town growth vis-à-vis employment, housing, traffic management; AirB&B rentals vs. entry level home ownership; the Greenway project; changes in the Board’s charter, transparency, and public “Town Hall” meetings; and diversity in governing appointees.

The Board of Aldermen consists of a Mayor and five Aldermen who are elected at large in nonpartisan elections held every two years. The Mayor and Board of Aldermen serve four-year staggered terms. The Vice-Mayor is appointed by vote of the majority of the membership of the Board.

Connie Burns, a member of Indivisible Black Mountain’s Steering Committee, said, “Your vote counts. This is a significant opportunity for Black Mountain residents to be introduced to the candidates and consider their merits. Whether you were born in the town or are a recent newcomer, you have seen the town’s popularity grow both in terms of tourism and real estate values. It is an important time to explore the options, changes, and plans for Black Mountain’s future development. Your vote counts.”

After registering, viewers will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. Please test the link. For more information, contact [email protected].

Proofreading DAW Books' "Abandoned" by W. Michael Gear. Part of a page-turning series! Recommended.

My bylined feature story about the Chamber Music Society of the Carolinas celebrating its name change and the 50th anniversary of the Swannanoa Chamber Music Festival (former name) appeared on the cover of the "Living" section of the Asheville Citizen-Times on Sunday, June 9, and spread onto two additional pages. It was so much fun for me to write and so satisfying to see the turnout at the season's first concert.

Proofreading great fantasy and sci-fi for DAW Books for many, many years. Great reading, great fun. Kudos to Betsy Wollheim and Sheila Gilbert for their great taste and encouragement of fine talents and stature in the field, and thanks to Joshua Starr for excellence in editorial management.
